“Dear PoPville,

I witnessed a rather disturbing event yesterday evening (April 28) on the 700 block of Morton Street NW. From inside the house I was at, I heard multiple gut wrenching howls seeming to come from a dog. I go outside and notice on the sidewalk at the middle of the block a man with two pit bulls – one of which appeared to be hanging from a tree. The dog was howling in pain and I couldn’t really see what was going on but the noises the dog made were definitely ones of pain. I proceeded to take a small video clip from afar (did not want to approach this man and the pit bulls). A screen shot is attached (grainy- but you can see the dog standing/hanging upright on the right). I spoke with two others that passed by and witnessed this going on and apparently the owner of the dog was teaching the dog to “prune the branches of the tree”. I have no idea what the hell that means, but the dog was hanging from a tree branch from his mouth and again making just the most terrible noises. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

Over the last month or so on my walk home from the Petworth metro I’ve seen at least 8 instances of cars with their back windows broken into. Every time these cars have been parked on the 3600 block of Georgia Ave directly next to the CVS (across from Fisherman of Men Church) in that stretch of 8-10 parking spaces before you hit Princeton Place. I have never seen it happen before this and I think some of the times it’s happening in broad daylight which is crazy to me considering how busy the street is.

I had my car window smashed in a couple years ago despite there being nothing of value in the car to steal and it was such a bummer, so I wish I could warn these people before they decide to park in these spots! Obviously people will continue to park there, but at least they know there’s a risk involved. Can CVS post notices on their side wall warning that there’s been a string of break-ins in those spots? Considering that that CVS is always a mess, I’m less than optimistic that they’d do anything about it; but I’d just hate to sit idly by as it happens to more people. Is there anything that we can do?”

From MPD:

“Over the course of the next few weeks some of us may see pink “tickets” on our vehicles. Officers will be looking for any vehicle found with items in plain view or with doors unlocked. Any vehicle they find will be given one of the Warning: Notice of Infraction “tickets”. These are not actual tickets, though they appear to be, they are educational and meant to be reminders.”

“Our efforts in the 900 block of G St., N.W. are really making a difference and I wanted to take a moment and give the community a brief update on our progress. Synthetic marijuana sales and use in this area are a huge concern. In this block over the past week Metropolitan Police Department officers have arrested 8 individuals for distribution of synthetic marijuana, and seized over 100 grams of the drug. Also during this period officers have arrested numerous individuals that congregate in this block for their outstanding arrest warrants. We plan to continue this type of enforcement and we plan on similar and even greater success, with a goal of eliminating any and all criminal activity in this block. I want to thank our community members that have assisting MPD with information on these criminals; Continued assistance and support from our community is essential in this type of problem. Thank you for your time and be safe.”

“Dear PoPville,

Does anyone have information on the shots fired incident that happened around 1am last night in the alley behind 3rd NE, between T and U? Two shots woke me up, and another seven or so followed. I called 911, and four squad cars came out for about two hours. I didn’t go out to speak with them at the time, but have been trying to follow-up today. Keep getting transferred and leaving messages. I’m wondering if anyone was hurt (hoping not; there wasn’t an ambulance), if they found casings (would like to know just how close this happened to my building–the shots seemed about 30 yards away), and if they have any suspects.”
