From MPD just after 11pm:

“Members are investigating an assault with a dangerous weapon in the 500 b/o Allison ST NW

Two individuals were sitting on the front porch the block. Three late teens or early 20’s males approached and fired multiple shots with at least one round striking a female victim on porch in leg.

Investigation is still in its early stages and more information will be provided when available.

(At this time, I am unable to confirm the number of shots fired, the caliber of the rounds, the number of weapons used, or if whether or not this incident is gang related and if the victim was specifically targeted. I am also unable to disclose at this time if a suspect is known or not.)

Thank you for you patience as we work to apprehend those responsible.”

Obviously glad arrests were made but this is very disheartening to put it mildly.

From MPD:

“At approximately 7:00 PM in the 1800 block of Newton Street, NW, a group of juveniles ranging in age from 10 to 17, robbed an adult male. They beat him badly and took his wallet and cell phone. Concerned citizens who observed this happening quickly called 9-1-1. Officers quickly responded and located 4 juveniles running in the south alley of the 1800 block of Newton Street, NW. The juveniles had the victims credit cards and cell phone. They also had blood on their clothing. All 4 were arrested.

burned library

There’s been some terrible shit happening these last few weeks, and though it’s no secret I love Little Free Libraries, I realize this is not on par with the other awfulness we’ve seen but we can’t deny there are serious issues unresolved. Serious issues. A reader reports:

“Little free library set on fire right next to the North Columbia Heights Community Garden in the alley between Park, Sherman, Lamont, and 11th.”

Update from another reader:

“I reported the arson to the MPD this morning. Two very nice officers came and informally looked at the damage. However, they didn’t take a formal report because I don’t own/run the Little Free Library. They said they would take a formal report from whomever owns/runs the library. I’m not sure who that would be. Maybe a PoPville reader knows?”

Another follow-up: I want to commend the MPD and the six officers that came by and investigated the burnt library this evening. One of the officers also took statements from me and one of my neighbors. They’re trying to contact the community organizations in charge of the Little Free Libraries.”

in the dark

“Dear PoPville,

The security enhancements promised below will be helpful only if actually implemented and done so with a sense of urgency. I live at the corner of Flagler and Adams Streets, NW. Last night, two nights following a homicide a half block south of the Adams/Flagler DC Water construction staging area and following the promises made below, I noticed that the east-side sidewalk on the 2200 block of Flagler Place is still almost completely dark as one walks north towards Adams Street –see attached photo. Additionally, the sidewalk dead-ends due to DC Water project fences that continue to block access to Adams Street. This morning, I walked down the stretch and could see that the light fixture on top of the DC Water fence is missing lightbulbs –see attached photo. It’s beyond my comprehension that such a situation would exist given what has happened in this area in recent days. I noticed this fixture missing lightbulbs only because it is near my house. I suspect that if I walked the perimeter of each of the three DC Water construction staging areas, there would be other fixtures in similar condition. I ask that DC Water increase the sense of urgency given the promises made below.” (more…)

From MPD:

“There is a smartphone app that is rapidly gaining popularity across the country. It is called Pokemon GO, and it is sort of an outdoor treasure hunt where you use your GPS-enabled smartphone to locate Pokemons. While the game was intended to be a fun outdoor activity where you can explore new areas and get some exercise in the process, there have already been reports that criminals are using the app to create “beacons” to draw people in and then rob them or commit other crimes. This is an easy way to be robbed of your cell phone, as criminals know you have one in your possession since it is required to play the game. Below are some tips to reduce your risk of becoming a victim: (more…)
