“Earlier today, officers assigned to the Third District were patrolling within PSA 305 with an added emphasis on combatting theft of packages within the Third District. As the officers entered the 800 block of T Street, NW, they observed packages that had recently been delivered to a residence in the block. The officers set up an observation post in the vicinity so they could conduct surveillance of the packages and the residence. A short time later, the officers observed a subject remove the packages from the porch and walk away; the individual was stopped a short distance away and found to be in possession of various packages. The officers were able to locate three different complainants and make an arrest.

If anyone has any additional information regarding this matter, they are encouraged to contact the Metropolitan Police Department on (202) 727-9099.”

And on Wednesday:

“Earlier today, members of the Third District received a call for a subject in 600 block of Kenyon Street, NW, who was acting suspiciously by going on the front porches of residences in the block. The officers, who are assigned the additional task of combating stolen packages in the Third District, monitored the call and responded to the area. Utilizing the lookout provided, the members canvassed the area and observed a subject matching the description. The officers also canvassed the immediate area and located an empty box with the shipping label still affixed. After contacting the intended recipient of the package, the officers were able to link the subject to the package’s contents and place him under arrest. This is yet another example of the community and the Metropolitan Police Department working together to solve crime issues in the District of Columbia.”

From WMATA:

“Metro’s security report for the first quarter of 2014 shows the overall crime rate is down by 31 percent, driven primarily by a significant reduction of three major crimes: robberies, snatches of electronic devices, and bicycle thefts. The report will be presented this morning to the Metro Board Safety & Security Committee by Metro Transit Police (MTPD) Chief Ron Pavlik.

Among the highlights:
• Snatches of electronic devices were reduced by 42 percent (137 to 79 crimes) in the first quarter, as compared to the same period last year.
• Bicycle thefts were reduced by more than half (56 percent), from 45 crimes in the first quarter of 2013 to 20 stolen bicycles this year. The reduction is credited to increased customer awareness, prevention programs including free U-lock giveaways, online bike registration, improved intelligence sharing, and undercover investigations.
• A 55 percent reduction in robbery (121 to 55 crimes).”

“Dear PoPville,

Just wanted to let you know about a fraud case I was involved in earlier today. I met someone from Craigslist at 1pm and purchased two tickets to Friday nights Wizards game. I met the kid at the foggy bottom metro station. As I was walking back to the office, I realized that I had been scammed. So I emailed him from a different email account and pretended to be a different person. He agreed to sell me the exact same tickets that I had just bought. So I called the police and officer G Burgess came and met me. Then we got a plain clothes officer to meet us and they arrested him. The guy is 17 years old and going to be tried as a juvenile. He was taken to juvenile processing.

Apparently, he handed off the $300 I gave him immediately after I paid him. So by the time he was arrested, he didn’t have the money. Here are pictures of what the tickets look like that he sold me.

Someone has now posted a warning message letting people know that they ONLY have electronic tickets to the playoff games and that anyone who tries to sell hard tickets is scamming you.

Craigslist Ads examples (PDF) all from same person.”

Heads up to others buying tickets off Craigslist.
