1337 Connecticut Ave, NW

Back in May Heritage India closed at 1337 Connecticut Ave, NW just south of Dupont Circle. A new tavern called The Gryphon will be taking over the space according to a recent liquor license application:

New Tavern serving light fare. Entertainment with dancing and DJ. Seating capacity of 175, Occupancy Load of 192, and Sidewalk Café with 24 seats.”

In early Oct. Heritage India opened a new location in the former Skewers space above Cafe Luna at 1633 P Street, NW.

Back in Aug. 2011 we learned that the Hawk n Dove at 329 Pennsylvania Avenue, SE had sold to Xavier Cervera and would undergo extensive renovations. Looks like they’re getting close to finishing as a new sign has gone up. Stay tuned.

Roast beef on sourdough. Lettuce tomato. Pickled red onion. Tiger sauce

Homemade potato chips

After Sunday their kitchen hours will be from 4 pm until 11pm the rest of the week.

1099 New York Avenue, NW

A couple weeks ago a reader shared a tip and a call to the restaurant indicated that Againn Gastropub would be closing after Nov. 3rd at 1099 New York Avenue, NW. Their General Manager and partner, Romeo Santos, emailed me saying they would not be closing. Their Website now says:

“It is with regret that we announce the closure of AGAINN. After weeks of deliberation with our investors we have decided to close. We want to thank the great city of Washington for its support over the last three years. We have been honored to serve all who have come into AGAINN. We will miss all of the wonderful people in this city! Regretfully, Romeo Santos, General Manager/Partner, AGAINN DC”

I emailed Mr. Santos to confirm that they have closed and this time he did confirm the closure.

Thanks to all who sent emails about the update.

Big news from @HStreetDC_ last night:

“End of an era! The Lil’ Pub on #capitolhill has been sold to next door neighbor CVS. Where is the Restoration Society? Landmark it!”

Li’l Pub is located at 655 Pennsylvania Avenue, SE. Another flickr user writes that it was:

“Built in 1937 as Little Tavern No. 20”

Little Tavern was:

a chain of hamburger restaurants in Baltimore, Maryland, and Washington, D.C.

The first Little Tavern opened March 24, 1927 in Louisville, Kentucky, by Harry F. Duncan. The first Washington location was opened in October 1928 and the first in Baltimore opened its doors in June 1930. By 1937, there were 33 shops open. At the height of the chain, there were almost 50 locations. Duncan sold the chain in 1981. The last restaurant closed on April 29, 2008.

Any fans of Li’l Pub?

Update: A representative of the Li’l Pub says they are unaware of any sale. Will update as more info/details become available.

Yesterday Navy Yard ANC Rep David Garber tweeted:

“Work begins on #NavyYard’s newest restaurant, Gordon Biersch. Word on street is that lease official at 100 M St SE”

EaterDC shares a few more details:

“The new brewery will be about 8,500 square feet in size; the opening date wasn’t immediately available.”

Gordon Biersch currently has a DC location at 900 F Street, NW. Any fans of Gordon Biersch?

Think they’ll be able to compete with the Bluejacket Brew Pub from the Neighborhood Restaurant Group?

The upper patio of the Poste courtyard has been transformed into a wintery cocktail lounge, complete with seasonal libations, fondue, fire pits and blankets. Lead bartender Jason Wiles has created a selection of seasonal sips that are available exclusively on the patio. Select drinks include: the Smokin’ Bacon Hot Chocolate made with bacon-infused Bulleit bourbon, hot cocoa and a homemade bacon cayenne marshmallow; and the Flip You For Real made with Maker’s Mark, apple cider, caramel and a whole egg. There will also be a selection of dark spirits and fortified wines for sipping. Chef Dennis Marron has created a menu of fondues, soups, and other bar bites available for sharing on the patio. The S’mores Fondue ($14), made with melted milk chocolate with graham crackers and marshmallows makes for a fun twist on traditional s’mores. Also available will be Classic Cheese Fondue ($17), melted comté cheese served with cubed bread, apples and sausage. Guests can also indulge in a classic Dark Chocolate Fondue ($11) served with fruit. Seasonal soups, escargots, mussels, mac and cheese, and selections from the raw bar are also available.

The official launch of the cour de l’hiver will be held on November 3rd from 4pm to 8pm in the courtyard, during which guests can lounge with blankets and heaters and sample $5 specially-priced cocktails from Wiles and complimentary bites from the courtyard menu by Chef Marron with live music from the Joe Chiocca band.

After the jump is the full cour de l’hiver cocktail menu: (more…)
