623 Pennsylvania Avenue, SE

Get ready for an awesome new addition to Capitol Hill. Beuchert’s Saloon is soft opening late next week at 623 Pennsylvania Avenue, SE next to Pound the Hill:

Their website says:

“Beuchert’s Saloon is a neighborhood restaurant and bar serving up a ‘farm American’ dining experience in the historically rich Eastern Market neighborhood of Washington, DC. With ingredients sourced from our family farm, Executive Chef Andrew Markert translates local, fresh produce into playful American fare with a creative twist.”

I stopped last night and was blown away by how cool the place turned out. It’s dominated by a super long bar with some more very cool seating in the back. It has also been a long time since I’ve met folks who are such genuinely nice people. I was only able to stay for a few minutes but I can’t wait to go back for a proper visit. Check out their menus here.

Have a look at more photos of the inside after the jump. (more…)

From ANC1C representing Adams Morgan:

ABC and Public Safety Committee
Wednesday, February 13, 7:00 PM
Kalorama Recreation Center, 1875 Columbia Road NW

Adams Morgan Moratorium. The Committee will continue discussion of the Adams Morgan Moratorium on alcohol licenses. The current Moratorium will expire early in 2014 and the Commission will need to let the ABC Board know how the community would like to proceed by fall of 2013. The Committee will endeavor to establish a schedule over which the discussion will continue, and to identify the topics that are likely to be considered along the way. The Committee will not vote concerning the substance of the Moratorium itself at this time.

While debate has once again started again around a proposed U street liquor license moratorium – I’m wondering what folks think of the one currently in place in Adams Morgan. Do you think it has worked in diversifying retail and adding daytime vitality to the neighborhood? Do you think it should expire in 2014?

Thanks to all who sent links about this huge news coming to Shaw. The Post’s Tom Sietsema shares the great details:

Smitten by trips to southern Spain in recent years, Derek Brown, one of the region’s top drinks authorities, is planning to replicate some of his experiences with a new bar here at home. Mockingbird Hill, expected to open in May at 1843 Seventh St. NW. in Shaw, will have a narrow but intriguing focus: lots of sherries and abundant hams, or “nibbling rather than dining,” Brown says, distinguishing his Spanish vision from that of Washington’s popular tapas restaurants, Estadio and Jaleo.

Another reader notes the emergence of a possible Sherry trend in our future…

More info on Mockingbird Hill as they get closer to opening.

From a press release:

On Tuesday, February 5 from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m., Lebanon’s first and only craft beer, 961 Beer will make its D.C. debut at ChurchKey (1337 14th Street NW). Founded in 2006 by Mazen Hajjar, the brewery began as an experiment among friends and has grown to produce 300,000 cases annually, including four “Regular” offerings and the first of what promises to be many “Brewmaster’s Select” offerings, their superior Lebanese Pale Ale. Hajjar will be on hand to meet, drink and answer questions with all attendees. Event will be pay-as-you-go.

961 Beer, named after the international dialing code for Lebanon, brands include: Lager, a Helles-style lager that is crisp and flavorful and just won “Best Lager” at the 2012 Hong Kong International Beer Awards; Red Ale, densely malt-y and reddish in color with an intensely fruity and aromatic flavor; Porter, brewed with dark roasted malts and hopped with traditional English varieties; Witbier, an unfiltered beer that is light and sweet with natural sediment; and Lebanese Pale Ale, based loosely on an English IPA with aromas inspired by the spice markets of the Middle East, brewed with 100% traditional Lebanese herbs and spices such as thyme, sumac, chamomile, sage, anise and mint.

961 Beer began as one of the world’s smallest microbreweries when Hajjar invited his friends to join him in brewing great beer in the country they love and call home. From 20-liter kettles on home stoves, the brewery has expanded to meet demand and now proudly brews nearly 300,000 cases annually. Focused on traditional techniques, quality ingredients and a deep love for their product, 961 Beer is one of the fastest-growing and most exciting craft breweries in the world today. The brewery is located in the foothills of Mazraat Yachoua, overlooking Beirut and the Mediterranean Sea.

1401 R St, NW

Thanks to a reader for sending the photo above of the coming soon sign for Bar di Bari. Back in Oct. 2012 we first plans of a new cafe coming to the corner of 14th and R St, NW in the new PN Hoffman building (Northern Exchange.) At that time a liquor license application stated it would be a:

“New European-style restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. Inside seating capacity of 32, total Occupancy Load of 97, and Sidewalk Café with 52 seats.”

Interesting to hear there will be a wine bar element as well. Updates as they get closer to opening.

Back in Aug. 2012 we saw the new Toledo Lounge had closed for renovations. At that time we also learned that Toledo Lounge would probably be renamed. Well looks like we now know the new name – Libertine. A proposed change to their liquor license out front states the name as Libertine and says they are looking to extend their hours for the sidewalk cafe to 2am Sunday – Thursday and until 3am on Friday and Saturdays. Stay tuned.

To my fellow Hopslam fans – they’ve arrived!

I got mine at D’vines in Columbia Heights. Limit one 6 pack per person. Anyone hear of any bars that has gotten a keg?
