From a press release:

Rí Rá Georgetown (3123-3125 M Street, NW; 202-751-2111) will unveil its highly anticipated Whiskey Room this Friday, January 24. Located on the restaurant’s second floor, the specialty bar will feature an extensive selection of whiskeys from around the world, offered by the glass or as “Whiskey Duels,” and a menu of contemporary Irish small plates.

In lieu of the standard whiskey flight, Rí Rá Georgetown introduces “Whiskey Duels,” an exciting activity to entertain the whiskey aficionado and novice with the nuances of different whiskeys from around the globe. The Whiskey Duels offer beginners an opportunity to start with the basics and those well-versed in whiskey the chance to put their taste and knowledge to the test. The duels, varying in price, will include head to head match-ups of some of the finest whiskey selections served in Glencairn crystal nosing glasses paired on handcrafted Vermont White Birch tasting disks.

Guests can experience differences in flavor based on the methods of distillation and aging. Duels include “Barrel Aged vs. Unaged” and “Port Casks vs. Sherry Casks.” Rye drinkers can opt for “The Sparring of the Ryes” duel to savor the distinction between Bulliet Rye vs. James E. Pepper Rye 100 Proof ($15). Those looking to expand their knowledge in whiskey origin can contest with “Irish Peat vs. Scottish Peat”—a Connemara single cask vs. Ardbeg Uigdail single malt ($18) and “Atlantic vs. Pacific”—a Highland Park 18 year old vs. Yamazaki 18 year old ($30).

In addition, the Whiskey Room selection showcases some of the rarest whiskeys in the world. Aficionados are invited to sample two of these offerings with the “Very Rare vs. Extra Rare” duel—Midleton Very Rare vs. Crown Royal Extra Rare ($30). (more…)

The folks at Acre 121 have been kind enough to host a PoPville party on Friday, January 31, from 5-8pm. The event will feature a new drink they will be offering called the PoPville Bang (a take on the Baltimore Bang – Bourbon, Pear Brandy, Lemon, Sugar – it is delicious) for $5, plus their regular happy hour specials, including all drafts for $5, select wines for $5, and select 1/2 price appetizers including: Deviled Eggs, Grilled Shrimp, Hot Legs, Hush Puppies, BBQ Pork Mac & Cheese, Okra & Manchego Flatbread. After the happy hour at 10pm The Bullbuckers will take the stage. I’ll also bring some t-shirts for those who’ve been asking. Hope to see lots of old and new folks. Have a great 3-day weekend!

Speaking of evolving spaces, a couple days ago we noted that the Maketto residency ended at Hanoi House and the space would become Den of Thieves. Born as Blackbyrd then Hanoi House then the Maketto residency and starting Saturday – 2005 14th St, NW it will become a “glamorous music driven dive bar” and it sounds pretty awesome.

Yesterday I spoke with owner Eric Hilton who shared a few details. Den of Thieves will be music driven hosting numerous DJ friends of Mr. Hilton (who of course is a founder of Thievery Corporation.) To start the space will only be open on weekends though soon it will be open weekdays too. Hilton himself is kicking off the festivities on Saturday (and will do continue DJing in the near future) This Saturday the music starts at 10pm (doors open at 8pm.) There is no cover and the space holds about 99 people. Hilton also noted that is place where DJs can do there thing and play whatever they want (nobody will be taking requests here.)

Hilton summed up his presence on the strip of 14th and U – “Gibson has really good craft cocktails, Marvin is Marvin, and Den of Thieves will be a really low key inexpensive spot with good music. 1, 2, 3.”

After the jump a look at the food and drink menus. (more…)

The strange saga of Logan Circle’s Bar di Bari continues. In October we learned the space abruptly closed with no notice only to later learn they were considering closing on Mondays or limiting hours during the winter. Now CityPaper reports that the space will become a new concept called Red Light. No details nor timing were given but Bar di Bari was still open as of yesterday. Their Facebook page also remains live though it hasn’t been updated since Dec. 13th. More info when it becomes available.

“Dear PoPville,

After wandering in, this place is better on the inside than outside. Happy hour specials (until 9pm) are amazing at buy one get one and even a shot, beer and hot dog for $6. While they are still updating on the exterior, the interior is well renovated with original tin ceilings and actually nice bathrooms.

It would be great for a place like this to do well in this neighborhood.

Yay Bravo Lounge on Georgia!”

From Operation Free JP:

“We are writing this on behalf of JP. As some of you may know, but most of you probably don’t, JP has been struggling with immigration issues for almost 13 years. JP was born in Bolivia and came to the United States in 2001. He arrived in the country and began to work legally on a work visa. His work visa subsequently expired, and he has been attempting to obtain US citizenship since 2010. He is not a legal US citizen. No matter your views on our country’s immigration policy, we have created this page because we know your views on JP. JP is a fixture and a highlight on the Washington, DC social scene. His smile lights up a room, his laugh fills the entire building, and his unparalleled cocktails set the night on fire. As his friends and family, we are soliciting your help to “free JP.”

JP is currently being held in a United States Immigration detention center in Farmville, VA and has been there since December, 19th. He is set to be deported within the next 3 to 6 weeks. Our mission in sharing his story is to help offset his legal fees. He will need over $7,500 at a minimum to get in front of a judge and potentially prevent his deportation. Since he has been detained for nearly a month now, his ability to work and earn a living has been severely compromised. We know JP has probably been there for you at some point, and now here is your chance to be there for him. No matter what your wallet can afford, no amount is too small. Every bit counts.

All donated funds will be withdrawn as a check made out directly to his attorney. Please help in anyway you can.

-Friends and Family of JP”

Maketto (eventually landing at 1351 H St, NE) has finished their residency at Hanoi House (2005 14th Street, NW – 14th and U St.) I’ve been told that a new spot is launching in the space this weekend to be called “Den of Thieves”. I have no idea what that is but I’ve been told more info will be released soon – updates when it is. I’m intrigued.

From their website:

“Most of you weren’t around in the late 1960s. A group of guys put together dinners for local motorcyclists and leathermen These dinners took place at a bar on 9th Street in NW called Louis’. Oddly enough, it was located right across the street from FBI headquarters, and these were the days of J. Edgar Hoover. The bar was renamed Louis’ Spartan Lounge, after the Spartans MC was formed on April 3, 1968. On September 4, 1968, Don Bruce became, what we now refer to as, our first “Baby Spartan.” These dates and events are important to this story, because they would give birth to the legendary DC Eagle.

The Eagle was forced from its nest on 9th Street, to make way for a new convention space. The bar closed at the regular hour on moving night and reopened the next day at noon in a brand new location. Many of the club members were drafted into the moving party to make sure everything would be ready. The Eagle was not just the child of Don and Eddie. Dick McHugh, Don’s partner in life, was there every step of the way. Dick was the Mr. Fix-It of the DC Eagle. He was the one that kept antiquated coolers, ice machines, air conditioning and heaters operating. Dick was the quiet force behind the scenes during the early days. But if you knew Dick, you could see his influence throughout the place. The time came again when the DC Eagle would be forced from it’s nest, to make way for a new technology center on 7th Street. Don and Eddie retired to Florida soon after the move. Dick stayed in town and opened Dick’s Place, on New York Avenue, in the old Manhattan Transfer Company building. Dick’s Place, became the DC Eagle that we know today. The rest, as they say, is history.”

And the history continues on Benning Road.
