The newly opened City Tap House, located at 901 9th Street, NW, just steps from the Verizon Center, is pleased to host a special bracket party on Wednesday, March 19th at 5 PM. City Tap House will be featuring two special casks of Sly Fox Brewing Company’s Odyssey Imperial IPA and Route 113 IPA. 10-ounce pours will be priced from $6 to $7 each. Guests are encouraged to stay the evening because the individuals who kick each keg will receive a Sly Fox Brewing Company swag bag.

Additionally, bracket busters have until 12 Midnight to hand in their brackets and become eligible to win two prize packs. Touchdown Sports Bar becomes Handsome Cock on U Street – Seriously – I think

“Our landlord doesn’t like the name , so for a while we will have fun with this song without a proper signage. We will stand firm and sooner or later we will put our name outside.”

Earlier this month Barred in DC noted:

“The folks behind the cult favorite dive bar The Codmother appear to be set to soon open a new dive [Handsome Cock] in the upstairs space at 1334 U St. NW formerly home to the Touchdown Sports Bar & Grill.”

What sounds like an early April Fools joke appears to be legit. There is a Handsome Cock facebook page set up for 1334 U St, NW and it says they soft opened on Friday. On Sunday afternoon a big question remark remained in the window:

So it’s not clear if this is a new dive bar, a new gay bar, a new gay dive bar, a new French bar, a new French dive bar, a new French gay dive bar, well there are many possibilities…

Anyway, Touchdown replaced Momo’s sports bar at the same time Codmother replaced Cafe Nema back in Jan. 2011. Handsome Cock (?) is located on the second floor of 1334 U St between the recently opened Fainting Goat and New Town Kitchen & Bar:

“New Tavern/Brew Pub. Growler, soups, flat breads, and salad. Entertainment with dancing, small ensemble, music including acoustic setting, jazz and bluegrass. Occupancy load is 134. Sidewalk Cafe”

Hours are listed as Sunday through Saturday 8 am – 2 am.

“The owner, Bill Perry, is a life-long DC resident and lives in the neighborhood next to his restaurant. Generally speaking, they are planning to have a casual sit-down place featuring “healthy food made from as many locally-grown ingredients as possible.”

“This brewpub, however, will be a little different from other brewpubs and restaurants around town: The waitstaff won’t accept tips. Instead, Perry says he plans to pay a “living wage” of at least $15 an hour.”

End of an Era Vol. 7 – Pour House Closing at the end of April on Capitol Hill

We couldn’t have asked for a better ride and we want to express our sincere gratitude to the neighbors, patrons and staff who have become our extended family over the past 11 years. While our decision was a difficult one, we look forward to remaining a part of the Capitol Hill and DC community through Trusty’s and Star & Shamrock, and the soon-to-open Barrel and Compass Rose.

With that being said, we’ll save the goodbyes and salutations for a bit later—we still have a month and half left and we’re looking forward to one last March Madness and a great sendoff in April. More details about upcoming events will follow shortly.

Finally an opening date for the former Guitar Shop space located right about Dupont’s Shake Shack.

We previously learned it would be an:

“Upscale tavern serving European sausages, hotdogs, pretzels and popcorns featuring DJ and background music. No designated dance floor – no dancing. Summer Garden with 210 seats. Seating capacity is 60. Total occupancy load is 330.”

Now we have a name – Sauf Haus – coming this summer:

Get Ready for Craft Liquor Pubs “on-premise establishment to manufacture, distill and store craft liquors—like gin and vodka”

“Three new alcoholic beverage laws are in effect that could impact the businesses of on-premise establishments and alcohol manufacturers in the District.

An ABC licensed restaurant, tavern, nightclub, hotel or multipurpose facility that has a class C license can now apply with the Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration (ABRA) for a Distillery Pub Permit. The permit allows an on-premise establishment to manufacture, distill and store craft liquors—like gin and vodka—on licensed premises or in an area immediately adjacent to the premises.

The Distillery Pub Licensure Act of 2013 (B20-29) also permits licensees to sell the liquor they produce to patrons for either on or off-premise consumption. Sales for off-premise consumption must be in sealed containers and can occur from 7 a.m.-midnight, seven days a week. Spirits may also be sold to wholesalers for resale to other ABC licensees in the District.

An ABC licensed establishment can apply for a distillery pub permit by visiting ABRA’s office located at 2000 14th St., NW. The annual fee for the permit is $7,500. (more…)
