We first heard about plans for Pub and the People back in October:
“A neighborhood restaurant and bar with 70 seats indoors and a potential for up to 100 outdoors. The largest patio in the area will also provide a view of the U.S. Capitol Building (which will be nice, assuming it ever reopens). Indoors, the space will bring the atmosphere of DC’s early pubs and restaurants. Think exposed brick and wood, not suspenders.
We have recruited Chef Dan Dalcin, currently Sous Chef at the award-winning Black Salt in Palisades. Chef Dan’s menu will offer traditional American cuisine, and will draw influence from several other cuisine types: Southern, Southwestern, Seafood, Asian, and Vegetarian.”
And we saw some renderings later that month. And now they’ve applied for a liquor license:
“New Tavern serving high-quality American Fare with entertainment for special events, live music, karaoke and community speaking events. Total occupancy is 99. Sidewalk Café with seating for 125 patrons.”
Very much looking forward to this becoming a reality.

“Thank you to everyone who signed the petition, emailed their representatives, and came out to support The Washington Firehouse Restaurant. Our ABRA hearing lasted almost 7 hours yesterday and we should hear back from the board within 60 days as to their determination on our application and the hours of operation. As soon as we hear from the board we will post the news on our Facebook page. Thank you again and have a great week.”

“I saw your post about Mum Mum being back from the dead after announcing they were closing in January. Just wanted to let you know that it is now officially closed and the location is under new ownership.
We will be opening Rebellion in early April after renovations. Rebellion will be a classic American Tavern, but with a modern, new-age feel. It will be your “everyday public house,” your new neighborhood bar. With American tavern decor and Southern-inspired comfort food, Rebellion has both a street front and a rooftop patio for sipping drinks in warmer weather.”

In 1791, Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton proposed an excise tax on domestically produced distilled spirits. The tax was a part of Hamilton’s plan to centralize government and reduce the country’s increasing war debt. Farmers living west of the Appalachian Mountains in the states of Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, North and South Carolina, and Virginia were veterans and they distilled their excess grain and corn into whiskey and used it as a medium of exchange. For them (like us in DC today), the tax not only seemed too similar to the American Revolution, [taxation without (local) representation], but it was also a personal affront on their ability to make a living. They thought that Hamilton designed the tax, the equivalent to an income tax, to keep them poor and benefit the larger, wealthier distillers who lived east of the Appalachians and didn’t have to pay the tax. As tax officials set out to collect the tax in these areas, the farmers began to voice their defiance of the law and rioted. They rebelled. This Rebellion, which lasted until 1794, is widely regarded as one of the reasons for the birth of American Bourbon in this region.

A new tavern is coming to the former Ma Ma’s Southern Cuisine space which closed back in October (formerly Hadiyah Cafe before that.) A recent liquor license placard has been posted that says:
“This is a new “C” Tavern with a Summer Garden. The establishment will serve coffee, small dishes and alcoholic beverages, while offering ping pong tables for use by patrons. Establishment will offer entertainment from DJs and musicians.”

“An LLC called “Tipsy Peacock” was registered on Valentine’s Day to 2915 Georgia Ave. NW. My curiosity is piqued.”
Though no info is available – Tipsy Peacock does have a website set up:
Tipsy Peacock will be located right next to Bravo Lounge at the corner of Georgia and Columbia Rd, NW. The property was a Good Deal or Not? post back in 2008. At that time the asking price was $549,999. More info on this phenomenally named new spot when it becomes available.

The viewing party will kick-off with an extended Red Carpet Happy Hour from 4:00 to 8:00pm. Earlier in the month we learned that another new sports bar would be coming to the east end of H Street.
Yesterday morning H Street guru, @HStreetDC_, tweeted an interesting tidbit:
“Owner of @theElroy opening new kid-friendly sports bar at 1427 H.
Burgers, etc, geared to sports so ppl can bring kids earlier in day.”
CityPaper checked in with the owner and reports:
“Graham hopes Halftime Sports Bar will not just be a place to watch sports, but a place with guest appearances by sports personalities. Expect a pretty simple menu with things like burgers and fries—”we ain’t cooking filet mignons,” he says.”
Standby for an opening this May.

14th and Quincy Street, NW
Last we checked back in December we knew good things were coming to Lyman’s Tavern coming to the former laundromat space next to Red Derby. Well I got to take a peek over the weekend and holy cow this place is looking sweet. I haven’t been this excited about a new bar since, well, Red Derby opened. I’m happy to say it’s looking like Lyman’s will be a worthy neighbor to the Derby. This is another real deal non pretentious neighborhood bar. The space is dominated by a huge wooden bar. In the back there will be a little stage for music and three pinball machines. In the way way back is a small kitchen. And the best news – they open in March. Stay tuned for an exact date.
