The space formerly home to Slaviya which has been closed for years has finally lost the huge awning. Hoping that means a new (good) tenant soon for the huge space.

From a press release:

“The Georgetown Business Improvement District (BID) welcomes the announcement earlier today that the D.C. Government’s Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration (ABRA) will begin accepting applications for four licenses beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 10.

Georgetown is a popular commercial destination with more than 120 restaurants, cafes and bakeries in addition to over 300 stores, salons and galleries. Welcoming new, high-quality restaurants is an important part of sustaining Georgetown’s status as a world-renowned neighborhood.

The ABRA announcement covers one tavern license and three restaurant licenses. The tavern license is only available to an existing restaurant located in the Georgetown Historic District. The three new restaurant licenses stem from a license class change and from cancellations of previous or existing licenses. (more…)

From a press release:

“Marvin, the Washington D.C. bistro and bar inspired by the transformative time D.C. native Marvin Gaye spent in Belgium, announces it’s 2014 Marvin Gaye Day celebration, marking what would have been the 75th birthday of the legendary singer.

The 7th annual Marvin Gaye Day celebration begins at 4pm on Wednesday, April 2nd with a performance by Gaye’s original band, The Marquees, a Marvin tradition since 2008. Joining them are soul singers Martin Luther and Maimouna Youssef, who will perform a rousing tribute to Gaye and Tammi Terrell — Gaye’s duet partner on seven Top 40 singles including “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” and “You’re All I Need To Get By”. Gordon “Guitar” Banks, Gaye’s music director, the Savoy-Ellingtons, children of musical great Duke Ellington, and a roster of local artists will all pay tribute with musical performances throughout the day.

Washington D.C. based indie rock band, U.S. Royalty, joins the line-up this year showing how Marvin’s influence transcends not only time, but also genre. Additionally, neighboring vinyl shop, Som Records will host a “Hitsville Pop-up Shop” at Marvin selling the best vinyl from the 1960s to the early 1980s from 4pm-close.

In keeping with tradition, all proceeds from the day’s events will benefit The Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, the beneficiary chosen by the Gaye family, and given in Marvin Gaye’s name.”

Marvin is located at 2007 14th Street, NW just north of U Street.

On March 8th we learned about a stabbing inside Club XII:

“An altercation occurred inside the establishment that resulted in an individual being stabbed. He was transported to an area hospital and treated for non life threatening injuries. A suspect was arrested on the scene.”

ANC Commissioner @jaybeas updates:

“For anyone interested, XII has been allowed to open again, per ABC Board order. There is supposedly a revised security plan in place.”

From the Coupe:

“Our power is out again on 11th. The Pint, KBC, Maple, we’re all down again!”

4th time since Thanksgiving!

Update via CM Jim Graham:

Councilmember Graham & members of the Columbia Heights community:

Pepco’s crews have located a fault and are preparing to make new splices to restore the circuit with an ETR of 1 am, presuming there are no further damage locations. The fault was in a switch that we had planned to replace as part of the work we outlined to this community last week.

In addition to the work being performed tonight, we are currently replacing cable on 14th St. between Columbia Rd. and Monroe St., NW, over the next 3 – 4 weeks. We will also replace cable on Park Road between Holmeade and 14th St., NW. In order to complete the cable replacement, we need to install new conduit in 2 areas. We are currently expanding a manhole and installing new conduit near Park Rd. and Holmeade Pl. NW. This work will take approximately eight weeks total to complete.

We will also install conduit in the following location:15 – 20′ of 14th St. near Park Rd. and also 350 – 400′ on Park Rd. east of 14th St., NW. Once the manhole and conduit work is complete, we will replace cable on Park Road between 14th St. and 11th St., NW. In addition, we will increase the capacity of two transformers and will replace one switch.

We have completed the installation of 500′ of new primary cable along Park Road near 11th Street and have completed an AMI review of overload trends and have identified transformers to upgrade in 2 locations. We are targeting the end of May to complete these activities at this time.

Once again, we regret the hardship these outages have caused, and remain committed to making the necessary repairs and upgrades as quickly as possible.

I will provide additional updates as information becomes available.

Thank you,

Marc

A couple of weeks ago I posted about Tipsy Peacock coming right next door to Bravo Lounge at the corner of Georgia and Columbia Rd, NW. They’ve now launched a facebook page:

Georgia Avenue’s first wine bar featuring wines from around the world along with international light fare.”

Via email the owner tells me that they are in the “very early stages” and “are excited to be opening on Georgia Avenue and look forward to having the community involved!”

Awesome.
