Normally I get tons of restaurant PR emails everyday. If a restaurant raises their thermostadt 2 degrees I’ll get a blaring email two pages long celebrating the feat. Now I’ve gotten dozens of emails and tweets from readers asking where to watch the GOP Debate tomorrow night and if there are any restaurant specials. Not one Restaurant/PR email. Boo. I do however look forward to hearing about National Tripe Day and the all specials inspired by your chef’s summer trip to Guadalajara. Ok sorry – where to watch the GOP debate tomorrow because we know it is going to be awesome.

Here’s a few I’ve found and please add others you may have heard of in the comments:

1. How could I forget – Stetson’s (1610 U Street, NW) of course will be showing the debate. Ed. Note: thank God fears of end of an era were premature! Knock wood, knock wood.

2. Ventnor Cafe in Adams Morgan (2411 18th Street, NW): “Join us at our Upstiars bar for the 1st GOP debate. In our tradition of showing more than just sports we welcome all to watch while The Donald is still in the action. I mean with The Donald on live TV this has got to be good, right?”

3. Lou’s City Bar in Columbia Heights (14th and Irving St, NW)

4. Looking Glass Lounge in Petworth (3634 Georgia Ave NW) “Come join us for the Republican Primary Debates. There will be drinking games, drink specials, hilarity and sadness. Then, there will be more drinking, hilarity and sadness as we watch Jon Stewart’s last Daily Show.”

5. Network For Progress at Cambria Suites in Shaw

“6:30pm-10:30pm Thursday, August 6th
(6:30 21+ Rooftop Mixer, 9:00 Debate Watch, 11:00 Stewart Finale)
Cambria Suites
(rooftop patio)
899 O Street NW”

Earlier we noted the new paint job at The Airedale coming to the former Mad Momos space. Signs now painted and a bit more info from the owner:

“We have a new hand-painted sign courtesy of Ross from Sure Hand signs out of Richmond.

The Old Overholt soft serve is ready to go. We have consulted with a few sources and have had success (it isn’t easy getting something with well over a pint of whiskey in it to freeze). We feel we have achieved the perfect combination of flavor and booziness.

3 new items have been added to the regular menu; a spinach quiche, a gazpacho and polenta with sauteed mushrooms. We will also offer a tartine on a regular menu that will also be available for brunch. All are vegetarian or vegan and the polenta is gluten free.

We would also like to note that the Airedale will always welcome well-behaved dogs.

Our additional beer lines (and prosecco line) are being installed this week and everything is accelerating towards our launch. We are planning on opening in August.”

Stay tuned for an exact opening date!

A few weeks ago we learned about plans for The Airedale Gastropub and Beer Garden coming to Columbia Heights:

“Our bar program includes prosecco based cocktails, European classics like the Aperol spritz, French 75 and the Pimm’s Royal Cup as well as our own creations. The selection of spirits will be quite whiskey-forward with ryes and bourbons being well represented at all price points. We also plan on serving an Old Overholt soft serve, each serving containing a full shot of rye. We will offer an entire range of classic, handmade cocktails as well. There will be 15 beers on tap and we will make our own Radler (don’t worry we’ll have Stiegl too).

The menu is classic European bar and cafe food served a la carte. The focus is on authentic, accessible pub and bar food from across Europe with one or two local favorites added as well. I have attached a preliminary menu for your consideration.”

Like the toned down paint job?

Just noticed Veranda is looking to change their alcohol license from Restaurant to Tavern (which I think just means they need to sell less food every month.) But man I haven’t been to Veranda in ages. I used to love this place but to be honest that was before a million spots opened up. Anyone been recently? Anyone eaten there recently? You can see their menu here. Is it still a “hidden” gem?

From an email:

“Ye olde Black Squirrel village welcomes wenches and princes alike to our Men in Tights Mead Day Renaissance Faire , Saturday, August 1st, starting at 12 noon.

Fasten up your corset, hitch up your tights, and go back in time to merry olde England.

Quench your thirst with a goblet of the finest mead; sate your appetite with a gigantic turkey leg, knave sandwich, or succulent steak-on-a-stake.

Test your skill at the ancient sport of cornhole or indulge in an Elizabethan drinking game.

The long celebrated European tradition of mead-making is experiencing a revival, right here in river city. Guests will be able to sample some of the finest modern mead, including those from:

♦ Charm City Meadery,
♦ Moonlight Meadery,
♦ B. Nektar Meadery, and
♦ Honey Grail Meadery.

A representative from locally based Honey Grail Meadery will be on hand to talk mead making and distribute samples of its Boudica’s Uprising Honey Mead.

Those who arrive dressed as a medieval maiden, Scottish lass, Crusader, or druid– or a kilt flashing in the manner of William Wallace–will receive 10 percent off their bill.

Go on, smite thy thirst”

Ed. Note: To properly share how excited folks are about this one – I’d say I got about fifty emails from folks forwarding this news. Normally when folks are excited I’ll get five. This could easily be the most eagerly anticipated (re)opening of 2016.

Also from the Washington Post (and also from Tom Brown, see previous post):

“Brown has signed a lease on a two-story building at 1539 Seventh St. NW, next to Ivy and Coney, and he plans to reopen the Passenger in February 2016.”
