The Washington Post reported back in April:

“The menu will be “extensively based in classic cocktails and a smaller number of things we’ve come up with,” Brown says. His dream would be to have a “cocktail catalog” of 50 to 60 drinks, “but I know that could be overwhelming for people. I don’t know how to present that yet.”

Now we know how Brown got the name Left Door:

Back in February and then May we noted some drama at The Islander. For fans there is a sad update. Thanks to all who sent emails about the Washington Post article:

“Green said that after decades of serving up pineapple chicken, Caribbean kicker cocktails and Green’s Calypso Chicken, she is closing the Islander, eager to leave the stresses of running a restaurant in a changing neighborhood to someone else.”

Though the Post also notes:

“But there is a glimmer of hope that the spirit of the Islander may live on. As manager of the lounge, Darryl Green said he plans to take over and relocate the business to a more affordable place in the District.”

Drink City is written by Beau Finley.  This post originally appeared on DC Focused.

Part-time bug geek, former entomologist, and current bartender Tania Morgan is the creator of a number of delicious cocktails at both Church & State and Wisdom. Her great taste and charm make her the subject of this month’s Drink City. Drink City is a series of snapshots of people in the D.C. area who are invested in D.C.’s drinking culture.

What brought you to D.C.?

My husband and I both finished grad school in California in 2008. He got a post-doc in D.C., and I ended up deciding I didn’t want to work in a lab any more. I was lucky enough to come here when the cocktail scene was really starting and found a new passion.

How long have you been bartending in the city?

I’ve been bartending for a little over four years. I started at Fruitbat on H Street as a server and barback, and eventually became a bartender there. When Fruitbat changed over to Atlas Arcade, I moved upstairs to Church & State and also started bartending at Wisdom. I’m currently bartending at both Church & State and Wisdom. Between the two bars, I get to play with a variety of cool techniques and flavors. Church exclusively carries American made spirits and we make a lot of infusions, syrups and vermouths. Wisdom has this amazing vermouth and liqueur selection that I’m still learning about even after being there for years. Between the two, my cocktail geek tendencies get to run wild.

The Petworth restaurant explosion of 2015 continues with word of a new Latin American Wine and Spirits Bar coming to Georgia Avenue. Word on the street is that it will have:

“About 20 Latin American wines by the glass, plus a cocktail list featuring Latin American spirits. Full menu featuring foods from across Latin America, and a good sized patio space in the rear.”

Stay tuned for updates when more is known and they get closer to opening.

Named after legendary Washington Senators Hall of Famer and local icon Walter Johnson, the bar and restaurant will have a sports themed look and feel, with a décor highlighting the prohibition era of baseball.
