From an email:

“The Wydown recently expanded its menu to offer wine, beer, and cocktails – and we would like DC to know about it!

*The Wydown’s new menu features 8 wines, 3 beers, and 4 craft cocktails.

**Beer, wine, and mimosas are available starting at 9am and cocktails are available starting at 4pm daily. We have extended hours to remain open until 8:30 Sunday through Thursday, and 10:30pm on Friday and Saturday. Coffee and espresso will remain available at all times.

*The cocktails are made from fresh, made-in-house ingredients, including a gin and house tonic, an old fashioned with house coffee bitters and cascara syrup, and a seasonal punch with gin, fresh pineapple syrup, oleo saccharum, lemon and Moroccan mint tea.

*The wine offerings include white, red, rose, and sparkling options. We are particularly enjoying the Evodia, a full bodied, fruity garnacha from Spain and the peachy, medium bodied White Hall Viognier, from a local Virginia vineyard.”

Anyone sample the goods yet? What’s the early word?

The stuff legends are made out of – February 7th, 2009

It is no secret that I love this place. They’ve been through a lot over the years and come out the other side smiling, well, they’ve come out the other side as solid as ever. Congrats to the whole team who are really way too modest – to maintain this level of great for so many years is not an easy task. The Street changes, Solly’s of course changes with it but at the end of the day remains true its soul – a no bullshit, good bar.

From a press release:

“On Sunday, October 9th Solly’s Tavern will celebrate 10 years on U Street with an anniversary party starting at 8:30 pm at 1942 11th St. NW that will feature the DJ-stylings of “Tony T” (Tony Tomelden of The Pug fame).

The tavern, that was once described by the Washington Post as “A cozy neighborhood dive with cheap PBR and friendly bartenders” is celebrating its 10th anniversary by hosting a party that will raise money of local youth non-profits. Proceeds from Solly’s commemorative anniversary t-shirts, silent auctioned items and all bar sales will go to support two local youth charities; Washington Jesuit Academy and Hoops Sagrado. (more…)

“James Beard Award-nominated Columbia Room (124 Blagden Alley NW) welcomes the fall season with a new cocktail and food menu inspired by leaves and the richness of nature.

columbia-room-fall-menu-2016 (PDF)

The new fall menu launches Tuesday, October 4 in the Tasting Room, Spirits Library and Punch Garden and the new food offerings mark the first menu from Chef Johnny Spero, who took over Columbia Room’s culinary program as executive chef this summer. Leaves are the centerpiece of the three- and five-course Tasting Room menu, with a diverse array of foliage being incorporated into the cocktail-and-small-plate pairings, including buchu leaf, sheep sorrel leaf, shiso leaf, fig leaf, blackberry leaf and sage. Huge week for Logan Circle continues with some scuttlebutt about the rest of the retail for the new building at 14th and Rhode Island Ave, NW. On Monday I was happy to share confirmation about a Shake Shack coming to the old Caribou Coffee location. Now a very good source says that the two other retail spaces, either in that building or next door will be taken over by the Hilton brothers of Marvin, Brixton, El Rey, Satellite Room etc. I’m hearing that they will be opening two new bars in two separate spaces. I’m not exactly sure how the logistics will work but stay tuned for many more updates when/if confirmation comes.

Ed. Note: Last week we learned “Eric and Ian Hilton, renowned for creating neighborhood mainstays including Georgetown’s Chez Billy Sud, and The Gibson along 14th Street, will open The Brighton, a high-energy waterfront pub.”

“Dear PoPville,

Some very vague tweets last week from Union Drinkery (the bar next to Small Fry) saying they are doing a soft opening this week.

They tweeted me saying they were open last night.”

And this is coming:

central
1001 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW

From a press release:

“James Beard Award-winning bistro Central Michel Richard will host forthcoming Washington restaurant The Shaw Bijou for a preview pop-up bar at Central in downtown D.C. on Thursday, October 6 and Friday, October 7 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. each night.

The pop-up bar will be a homecoming of sorts for The Shaw Bijou’s head bartender Ben Long, who was part of the Central opening team along with current Central Wine Director Brian Zipin back in February 2007.

Processed with Snapseed.
“The Poire Sour cocktail will be featured during The Shaw Bijou bar pop-up at Central Michel Richard”

Long’s two-day return to Central will feature seven cocktails ($14) highlighting the late Chef Michel Richard’s love of pears, including the Pear Twenty and Pear Pan-Americano, as well as cocktails from The Shaw Bijou’s upcoming menu such as the Tritter Rickey made with pink gin and absinthe.

“When Central opened, Chef Michel, Brian Zipin, and his management staff took a chance on a young, green bartender that was eager to learn,” says Long. “Because of their generosity I get to work with the great people of The Shaw Bijou and teach the principles I learned at Central to a whole new generation of bartenders. I was honored to be asked to come back behind the Central bar in Michel’s memory and work again.”

Long has graciously pledged to donate all tip proceeds from the two-day pop-up towards St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, a charity close to Michel Richard’s heart.
