Fear not. Rain no longer has to ruin your time in Shaw’s adult tree house as it is no match for El Techo’s new all-weather roof set to unveil Cinco de Mayo weekend. The new roof will be a 14- foot high structure made from horizontally louvered semi-clear panels, which will allow the sun to shine through, even during those sudden summer showers. “After 12 years of serving the local community of the U Street corridor, the bar at 2106 Vermont Ave NW will be replaced with a mixed-use development to match the fast-growing density of the area. The massing of the building is a result of creating a balance between the massive developments along Florida Ave and the smaller scale buildings on the block. The proposed building will consist of one retail space and nine residential units. Each unit will consist of four to six bedrooms and structured for communal living. Each resident will have their own private space and be a part of a communal living space within their unit. In addition to that, the building will have an amenity space on the rooftop to serve the entire building.”

“The new Y2K pop up bar was designed and built by two local female artists. Anna Pineapple and Kira Tai are the founders of Pineapple Tai Entertainment, a boutique arts and entertainment company.
The pop up bar features a 2000 New Year’s Eve ball drop, Lisa Frank tribute wall, a retro game room, and hundreds of collectible items from the late 90s and early 2000s. Among the things you’ll see on the bar: all 5 of the *NSYNC marionette dolls, flip phones, hit clips, furbies, Macintosh computers, and all your favorite forgotten movies, artists, and books.
The bar tops and tables are covered with hand cut and arranged magazine clips and photos from 1995-2005. There are over 1,000 CDs on the walls and hung from the ceiling.
There are themed cocktails on the menu including Spiced Girls, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Baby Phat, and Kill Bill. Food is also served from the restaurant downstairs, Rewind.”

Yesterday morning I posted about the prolonged closure of CRISP. In a stroke of coincidence and good fortune Eater got some more details later that afternoon:
“Bloomingdale’s Fried Chicken Place Is Turning Into an Italian Bar With Board Games
Crisp, the Bloomingdale bar and restaurant known for its Nashville hot wings and chicken sandwiches, is scratching its longtime poultry theme. New owners of the two-story property plan to flip it into a new bar called Hopscotch.”
Apropos of nothing, as it is Friday post Mueller and I am dragging, allow me to share one of my favorite tv commercials from my youth, which my friends and I would mimic for hours. (more…)

UPDATE: An Italian Bar to be called Hopscotch is coming.
“Dear PoPville,
Getting ready to move to Bloomingdale and was excited to be close to Crisp as I enjoyed my meal there last time I went but looks like they may have shut down for good? According to their last twitter post in March they closed for renovations for what was supposed to be 4 days but now their website’s down. Any word?”
On March 8th they wrote:
“We will be closing Crisp Bar and Kitchen this weekend to renovate and clean the kitchen. We will reopen next Tuesday the 12th at normal operating hours. We apologize for any inconvenience, and hope to see you all soon!”
Anyone know if they are down for the count?
