3232 11th Street, NW

Back in Jan. 2012 we learned that Room 11 would be expanding next door into the former Jeans n Things space at 11th and Lamont St, NW. The renovations have been completed – and the expansion looks just as good if not better than the original space:

Room 11’s general manager Jessica Woods explains the expansion:

We envisioned the new space as a European-style cafe, offering simple but high-quality espresso beverages, coffee and tea. At night, our new bar menu will offer a few rotating cocktails highlighting aperitifs and digestifs. These cocktails will be available throughout all of Room 11 (wine bar and expansion cafe) and guests at the new bar may order any current Room 11 bar offering, we’ll just run it over from the current space.

In the morning, we’ll open at 8 a.m. each day, offering coffee service through dinner. We’ll have a small breakfast menu to start, highlighting pastries, and begin to offer lunch at 11 a.m.

At dinner, the full current Room 11 menu is available in all spaces. As you know, our new chef, Adam Howard, started Monday. So far he’s focused his attention on getting familiar with our space and drafting a lunch menu, but we’re excited to see him rolling out new dishes on the dinner menu as the winter progresses.

The new space has 12 table seats and 6 bar seats, enough to significantly decrease the wait for a space in the winter, but (we think) not so many that we endanger our intimate vibe.

Having stopped in last night I can def. say the vibe is intact! Have a look:

More photos after the jump. (more…)

12th and S St, NW

The long vacant building at the corner of 12 and S St, NW has undergone significant renovations recently. Back in May 2010 we heard a deli could be coming to the space. This morning I got confirmation that a coffee shop is coming soon. Cafe Collage recently closed nearby at 14th and T St, NW. Think a coffee shop would do well at the corner of 12th and S St, NW?

More info soon!

1160 1st St, NE

The Starbucks coming to 1st and M St, NE has opened over the weekend.

@TonyTGoodman tweeted:

“New NoMa Starbucks at 1st/M NE has already expanded their hours: now 5:30-8 M-F, 7-8 Sa, 8-7 Sun”

And thanks to all who wrote in about a second Starbucks opening in Union Station. This new one is located next to the Roti on the west side of the first floor:

Dear PoPville,

Just heard Cafe Collage is closing today from the woman who runs the place. Sad news. Not too surprising, though; I think most of the business came from people camping out all day with their laptops. The side street location didn’t help, and I always thought that having more pastries/more light inside would have been good for them.

We last judged Cafe Collage, located at 14th and T St, NW just east of St. Ex, back in Nov. 2011. Do you think a cafe can survive in this location?

2904 Georgia Ave, NW

Back in Feb. 2012 we first learned of plans for Harrar Coffee & Roastery. For a while it looked like plans had been abandoned but I finally ran into the owner last weekend who said they will be opening in mid-October. He underestimated how long it would take to get the proper permits, but things are back on track now.

Some may have also noticed work going on next door in the adjoining space – in less exciting news – that space will become a cell phone store.

On September 4, local Micro-Roaster Vigilante Coffee is opening DC’s first gourmet coffee Pop-up Shop! It will be located at Mr. Yogato (17th and P) from 7 am – 10:00 am everyday and operate as a completely separate store. Vigilante will feature a full espresso bar, single origin pour overs, Cold Brew Iced coffee, and a quick cup option for those on the run.

Vigilante is the only DC micro-roaster to feature Hawaiian beans; instead of importing from South America, co-founder Chris Roessler travels to farms on 4 different Hawaiian Islands to find the best American-grown beans! He is officially a “local micro-roaster,” meaning he roasts the beans here in DC in very small batches (less than 5 pounds) as opposed to the normal 20+ pound batch!
