“La colombe gets a sign. Mid jan open date… Hopefully!”
We’ve been counting down since Halloween but we’re really getting close. I’ve done a bunch of end of the year interviews asking about what I’m most looking forward to in 2014 – and I keep forgetting about this spot – so I’ll just say it here – I can’t freaking wait!
La Colombe will be located in Blagden Alley next to Rogue 24.

1320 U Street, NW
It was a good run for the Wydown Coffee Bar at 1320 U St, NW. This was their last weekend on U Street but fortunately they’ll be reopening in their permanent digs early next year in the new Louis Building on 14th Street just south of U Street.

The big Brookland announcements keep on coming:
“The Bozzuto Group, a Greenbelt, MD-based real estate services company, today announced that renowned dining establishment Busboys and Poets will join Monroe Street Market’s exciting list of tenants. Monroe Street Market is a multi-phase, mixed-use development located on five city blocks in Washington, D.C., adjacent to the Brookland-CUA Metro station.
Scheduled to open Fall 2014, the 7,400 square foot restaurant will be located in Monroe Street Market’s Cornerstone building. The eatery will provide breakfast, lunch and dinner service, as well as a full bar, and will offer a fresh, handmade menu, complete with vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free options. A children’s menu will also be available.
The Monroe Street Market address will be the sixth Washington, DC-area location for Busboys and Poets, with others located at 14th Street and V Street NW, 5th Street and K Street NW, Arlington, Hyattsville, and a Takoma venue coming Spring 2014. Each establishment showcases art work from local, national, and international artists, and hosts weekly events and performances.”

In September we noted the La Colombe coffee spot was starting to look awesome in Blagden Alley. Now a reader tells us:
“A contractor working at the future La Colombe tells me that it should be done in 5 weeks.”
Note how awesome the big garage doors turned out:

Back in 2011 Cafe International closed next to the former Sake Club space and today a Noodles and Company. Thanks to a reader for the good news on someone finally taking over the space – Dunkin Donuts. They are going to kill here.

Thanks to a reader for sending from Slate:
“Most of the shuttered Caribou branches are going to reopen as Peet’s Coffee outlets.”
In April it was reported by Star Tribune that:
“Caribou Coffee will close 80 underperforming stores and rebrand another 88 outlets to Peet’s Coffee & Tea, just four months after a German firm purchased the Brooklyn Center-based company.
Some Caribou coffeehouses in Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Washington, D.C., Maryland, Illinois, Georgia and eastern Wisconsin will be converted to Peet’s, another brand with the same ownership as Caribou.”
Any fans of Peet’s? You can see DC’s current Caribou locations here.
