7th and O Street, NW

From a press release:

“Roadside Development today announced a new tenant lease with Starbucks Coffee Company at City Market at O, the one million square-foot mixed-use development located in the heart of the historic Shaw neighborhood.

Construction is starting now on the full-service Starbucks, which will occupy a 1,600 square-foot space on O Street between 8th and 9th, located underneath the future Cambria Suites Hotel. Starbucks and the hotel will open this spring.

Starbucks is the third retail location announced at City Market at O, joining the flagship Giant Grocery Store, the largest grocery store in Washington, DC, open since November, and gelato retailer Docli Gelati, opening this spring.”

Not gonna lie, I’m been dreading this. This will probably kill Azi’s and possibly Cozy Corner. Starbucks is a proven small business destroyer. I loved bragging that there was no Starbucks within 5 blocks of my downtown home. Oh well.

I think the new La Colombe could give Starbucks a run for their money! But agree that Azi’s and Cozy Corner are going to see some fierce competition for their customers.

There will also be a massive influx of residents to balance it, too. It’s hard enough to squeeze four people in to order at Azi’s now; imagine if they had to handle all of the new tenants.

Maybe they will drive Cozy Corner to brew a decent cup of coffee.

I agree, they’re the Walmart of coffee shops.

    Yep, that’ll do well.

I will still go to Kafe Bohem on the weekend, but I can’t lie I am really excited to have a Starbucks close by.

Me too! With such a large space Starbucks is best there. Can’t wait! And I’ll continue to go to The Coffee Bar, Cafe Bohem, Blind Dog, Peregrin, and other smaller places. But I still love me a nice spacious Starbucks!!

Peregrine exists across the street from Starbucks in Eastern Market and down the street from Starbucks on 14th. The coffee place on 12th/S exists around the corner from a Starbucks. Lot 38 has a starbucks nearby. Baked and wired has a starbucks nearby. Swing’s has a Starbucks nearby. The density of the immediate neighborhood should support Starbucks and Azi’s. It’s up to Azi’s to make it happen.

And there’s that new coffee/cafe place opening in the laundromat across the street. It’s a pretty big space, hopefully they will be able to offer enough that’s different.

I though that too, except it’s not pretty big for a coffee shop, it’s enormous. Goodness knows what they plan to do to make use of all the space.

If they were smart they would create something diner-like a la The Coupe or the old Colorado Kitchen (damn those homemade donuts were good!). I’d be there every weekend, and then in on Tuesdays for meatloaf night as well.

Not nearly enough real-deal diners serving great modestly priced comfort food in town.

It’ll be nice to not have to go all the way to 14th and P now!

I wanted to like and support azis but just don’t like their coffee. Not fan of Starbucks either…but

Now a cross-fit studio needs to open and the DC circle of life will be complete.

    Starbucks and Gelato…YAWN!!

What would you prefer? Honestly, name something that would be 1) more interesting and 2) definitely commercially viable.
