From an email:

“2018 is going to be a big year for station-free bike sharing in the US and even bigger for ofo. To kick off the year and share some ofo love, we’re offering free rides in all US cities for the entire month of January.

That’s right, every ofo ride in the DC area in January is free!

As ofo continues to rapidly expand across the country, we wanted to take a moment to thank our first US cities and give something back, so starting today through January 31, all rides in the DC area are on us.

How it works: (more…)

Thanks to all who messaged. One reader reports:

“As I was going to work I saw an accident here that involved a bus, a car, and a bike. It appears that a car heading north on 11th was trying to make a left turn onto Florida in front of a bus. A biker heading down the hill in the bike lane was moving faster than the bus and was hidden to the driver of the car. As a result, the biker collided with the car who couldn’t see it coming because of the bus.

The issue of bikes and buses on 11th St has been previously raised on PoPville noting the dangers to bikers of having to navigate bus traffic on 11th. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

This morning as I was unlocking a Jump Bike on the bike racks outside the Woodley Park Metro, a woman who was locking her own bike lectured me on how it was improper for bike shares to be left on the racks because the racks were for people like her who own their bikes. She went on to claim, as if she knew this for a fact, that the city would not give Jump Bikes a contract after the current trial period because their bikes take up rack space. She then walked away.

I have no idea if what she is saying is true, but I am a big fan of Jump Bikes since the electric motor makes my uphill commute tolerable. DC is a hilly city, and a muggy city for much of the year, so many of us stand to bike more with the electric bikes as an option. Bottom line, I would be very sad if Jump Bikes couldn’t get a contract. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I was walking up 14th St towards the Columbia Heights metro (around 7:55-8 am at 14th and Columbia) and saw a man on a bike yelling at a car in front of him (they were heading south on 14th). I didn’t see anything before, but I assume that the car cut him off or something. But I did see the car (black Dodge minivan with DC plates) slow down, and then purposely swerve into the lane that the biker (white male, maybe in his 50s?) was in. He didn’t hit the biker, but the biker seemed to put his left arm out in an effort to “push” the car back (it looked like the biker had his full palm on the car, so the car was very close to him). I didn’t see anything beyond that, but I still felt like this was important enough to report in case something did happen. I called the police (District 3) to see if I could report anything, and they said there was nothing I could do. Is there really nothing to help bikers corroborate any incidents that occur?”
