Heather reports:

“Drivers at both ends blocking the “protected” bikelane next to Union Market to watch their kids play at Brentwood park. One parent told me it’s all good because he didn’t hit me with his car backing up. Vision zero indeed.”

Another enforcement issue – the bike lanes aren’t much use if there isn’t consistent enforcement. Reminds me of this classic conundrum: (more…)

440 K Street, NW

A tipster reports:

“it looks like BicycleSPACE in downtown is closing its doors. Final day from what I heard is on Monday, Labor Day.

I know they had a shop in Adams Morgan that closed in October 2018. That makes 2 of their 3 shops closing in less than a year.”

Ed. Note: Their third location is in Ivy City. I’ve emailed for confirmation about K Street and will update when/if I hear back.

Thanks to Audrey for sending: “It runs the length of Woodley Place, which is a one-way street on which the traffic changes directions at Woodley Rd. It’s one-way north-bound from Calvert Street to Woodley Rd (shown in the photo) and one-way south-bound from Cathedral Ave to Woodley Rd. The bike lane configurations are different on each segment of the street.” (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I am a busy DC parent who sometimes drives, sometimes bikes to work. I have a friend from college who was killed in DC in 2008 when a truck turned right through a bike lane and crushed her, so I’ve always been very safety-focused regardless of whether I’m on a bike or in a car.

I’m confused about who has the right of way after a car merges into the bike lane to turn right. According to DDOT, if you are a car wanting to turning right across a bike lane, the proper move is to wait for the cyclists to pass and then slowly merge into the bike lane before you turn right.

Joining the annals of awesome animals hitching rides comes an instant classic. And a corgi no less.

Thanks to Lex for sharing this awesomeness:

“Saw this woman on a bike, with a corgi, in a backpack (!!) near the Georgia Ave metro this morning. I don’t know who she is, but she and her doggo are clearly doing things right. Definitely put a smile on my face first thing in the morning!” (more…)

From an email:

“I represent the family of a recent college grad who was critically injured in a bicycle crash on Sunday, June 23rd at about 11:30 am at the intersection of 11 and U Street, NW. As a result of the crash, he fractured his skull and sustained a traumatic brain injury – and he was just released from Howard Hospital days ago after undergoing a craniotomy and spending significant time in the ICU.

Now that he is finally out of the hospital, his family is trying to identify any witnesses who might have more information about the crash.”

“Dear PoPville,

Just wanted to alert the community to something I’ve noticed the past few months. I walk to the Shaw metro each morning and have noticed a growing amount of groups of bikes locked to posts along the way. Mostly at the intersection of Rhode Island Ave and 8th St NW, on both sides of Rhode Island. The bikes are parked at the back of the Shaw library and in front of an Airbnb (Airbnb has it’s own yard and storage areas, so unlikely they’re for their guests). (more…)
