Back in June I shared some photos of the super cool ‘Glass Forest’ in the Palisades. Sadly, I was sent an email this morning saying it had been vandalized:
“Sometime over the past week, marauding kids demolished most of the sculptures that hung in the woods next to Palisades Park. Dubbed the “Glass Forest”, its creator lives nearby and has been laid out with illness for a week.”

1728 Connecticut Avenue, NW
Back in Feb. 2012 ArtJamz opened at 1742 Connecticut Ave, NW. In Nov. 2012 we learned that Kultura was closing at 1728 Connecticut Avenue, NW. Now ArtJamz is going to take over that space. I stopped in last night and they said they hoped to open in the new space around March 1st and were moving because the Kultura space was larger and had the additional benefit of two floors.
For those not familiar with ArtJamz:
Founded in 2010 in Washington DC, ArtJamz is the National Capital Region’s original source of participatory paint parties. We were the first to combine socializing, drinks and creative expression and let people unleash their inner artists. Our unique brand of guided freestyle paint parties are great for social and professional events, office outings, private paint parties, kids parties, and date nights as well as for singles looking for something fun to do in Washington DC.
HOW IT WORKS
ArtJamz is an open art studio and lounge where anyone can come-in to paint and drink. You are not confined by a specific class time or schedule. We operate like a restaurant – walk-in anytime we are open and feed your creative side.
It’s $12 an hour for studio time, which includes unlimited acrylic paints, paintbrushes and lots of cool “weapons of mass creativity” like paint knives, graffiti markers, pencils, oil pastels, glitter, drafting tape, construction paper, glue, stencils, and random crafty knicknacks. You’ll get a standing easel, a smock, a paint palette and personalized guidance from our art-trained Creative Enablers. Meanwhile, great music and a selection of wines, champagne and beers in the Artist Lounge will keep the creative juices flowing even in the most uncreative of souls.

Mayor Vincent C. Gray announced today that the District’s Adams Morgan and U Street NW neighborhoods were together selected as one of America’s Top 12 ArtPlaces by ArtPlace, a collaboration of leading national and regional foundations, banks and federal agencies committed to accelerating “creative placemaking”— putting art at the heart of a portfolio of strategies designed to revitalize communities.
“I am thrilled that ArtPlace has selected the Adams Morgan and U Street neighborhoods together as one of its Top 12 ArtPlaces in the nation,” said Mayor Gray. “This recognition affirms the investments we have been making in the District’s livability and sustainability as well as the investments we’ve made in our creative economy by supporting artists, small businesses, cultural non-profits, retail and restaurants. These individuals and institutions, in turn, improve the District’s quality of life by creating safe, convenient, unique and thriving neighborhoods.”
The 12 recognized communities across the nation were identified as having successfully combined the arts, artists and venues for creativity and expression with independent businesses, restaurants, and a walkable lifestyle to create vibrant neighborhoods. Neighborhoods in 11 other cities also received this distinction, including Dallas; Los Angeles; New York City; Portland, Ore.; San Francisco; and Seattle.
Mayor Gray and ArtPlace Director Carol Coletta were joined by officials from the D.C. Office of Planning (OP) and the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities for the announcement and a walking tour of Adams Morgan and U Street arts businesses and organizations.
America’s Top ArtPlaces is a new annual ArtPlace initiative recognizing neighborhoods in the largest 44 metropolitan areas in the country where the arts are central to creating the kinds of places where people want to be. The complete list is available for download here.

Arts@1830, Formerly Raven Arts Gallery opened at 1830 14th St, NW back in Oct. 2011. This is the space that was previously home to L and N thrift store. This is also the same building that used to be home to Hunted House upstairs which moved to H St, NE in May 2012. So now the whole building is vacant. It’ll be interesting to see who takes over this prime space.
Last week we learned that the LUX design store had closed across the street at 1821 14th Street, NW.
I’m really digging this new sculpture on the side of a row house just past Ellington Plaza by Bistro Bohem and the Ethiopian Restaurant Zenebech Injera at 6th and Florida Ave, NW. We’ve seen the sweet murals before but this is the first time I’m seeing the sculpture. Nice addition.

Ulysses Room, a beautiful and dramatic studio loft located south of Bloomingdale opens its doors to the city’s evolving creative community. The team behind Ulysses Room, The President Wears Prada, DeNada, and Kelly Towles, will host art exhibits, social media seminars, photography/digital design courses, and pop-up shops to support emerging artists, small brands, and visual creatives. In partnership with some of the city’s most visionary groups, Ulysses Room will serve as a hub to nurture creativity and fulfill the need for an imaginative learning infrastructure in DC.
Ulysses Room will also be available as a rental event space to the city’s creative and business community. The adaptable 630 square feet open loft studio is a versatile meeting, exhibition, and showroom space that features modern industrial design, a custom matte-black bar, exposed brick walls, original wood floors, and a 13-foot ivy-ringed skylight.
