‘Glass Forest’ Vandalized in the Palisades

June 2012

Back in June I shared some photos of the super cool ‘Glass Forest’ in the Palisades. Sadly, I was sent an email this morning saying it had been vandalized:

“Sometime over the past week, marauding kids demolished most of the sculptures that hung in the woods next to Palisades Park. Dubbed the “Glass Forest”, its creator lives nearby and has been laid out with illness for a week.”

You can see what it used to look like here.

While it is a valid assumption that kids did it, it doesn’t necessarily make it so. Still makes me sick, though, but definitely not as sick as the creator.

This is horrible and sad news. An urban retreat for some of us as we found peace and solace in this amazing installation in the woods.

Actually, I believe this happened over the summer as a result of the derecho. I ran over to the Palisades specifically to see the glass forest after reading about it on PoP. This was the condition it was in sometime in July – trees down, glass everywhere…unless it was fixed in the mean time, I believe it’s been like that for quite some time.

It’s still equally as sad, though 🙁

Who owns the property where the glass forest was? Is this on public or private land?

If this is public space, did the artist have permission to create the glass forest on public land?

    • How exactly do you want them to be punished if it was indeed public land and they created beauty without a permit?

We went in late summer/early fall certainly after Derecho and it was fine then. Very sad.
