“Dear PoPville,
My wife and I would like to renovate our older-than-me kitchen in our DC rowhouse. Our plan includes a full gut renovation down to the studs, installation of IKEA cabinets, converting from a gas range to induction, and replacing an existing back door and window with a large sliding door. We have our permits, but are looking for recommendations for a new general contractor who is communicative and reliable. I’d really appreciate any recommendations from the community!”

“We saw the post about LFDC digging and thought we’d let you know what’s happening. What this resident has seen is actually normal. When our LFDC contractors are working in a neighborhood, they will do work at each home multiple times. First, we do a test pit to verify if the line is lead and if it is lead we return again to replace it. We’ll do a temporary restoration on the yard when we complete the work and return later to do the final restoration work. Multiply that by every house in the neighborhood that signs up for LFDC and you get an idea of why our contractors are so frequently in the neighborhood. Most importantly, all of these steps are a critical part of our work to verify lead service lines and provide free replacements.

“Attorney General Brian L. Schwalb sued the owners of two apartment complexes in Ward 1 for allowing their buildings to fall into extreme disrepair and for failing to pay back the District for the cost of re-housing dozens of tenants after a gas explosion severely damaged one of the buildings and forced them from their homes.
The lawsuit alleges that John and Herminia Steininger allowed their properties located at 1433 Columbia Road NW and 1841 Lamont Street NW to fall into extreme disrepair, putting the health and safety of their tenants at risk. Since 2018, they have received citations for over 120 housing code violations as well as fines of over $140,000, yet they made no changes to fix the properties. (more…)

I unfortunately have finally received a positive Cyclospora test result after weeks of symptoms and have contacted the DC Health Dept to report it. I noticed that there haven’t been reports in DC proper, so I wanted to report here so the DC community knows and can stay safe! People with Cyclospora are not contagious as it doesn’t transmit between person to person. But, people should be careful when purchasing bagged lettuce and salad kits, berries, and fresh herbs as these are the leading contenders for where the outbreak is possible transmitted. Stay safe, and if your symptoms are persisting longer than a week or so insist on getting tested for cyclospora. (more…)
