Missed Connection – 28 July Passion Pit Show at the 9:30 Club

I was at the 28 July Passion Pit show at the 9:30 Club, and as I was walking out we made eye contact – I smiled, you waved. You (30s?M, around 6’0”) were wearing a white (linen or cotton?) short sleeve button down with blue embroidery, New Balance sneakers, and octagonal wire glasses. I (31F) had on a pink mini skirt, black shirt, and tortoise shell glasses.

Earlier in the evening (around 6:30pm) it was pouring down rain at U St metro and a bunch of us were waiting in the station for it to let up. You struck up a conversation with (more…)

Help: “Noisy Fan from Restaurant Below Apartment. Any ideas for solving it?”

“Dear PoPville,

I live in a large apartment building that sits directly above a restaurant (which opened early last fall). Nearly every day for two months, they have been operating a very loud industrial fan right below my window whenever the restaurant is open, which I have measured at 70 db from outside at the property line and 80 db from my apartment (with the window open), and sounds like someone is running a lawn mower nonstop. I’ve caught the restaurant management lying on multiple occasions, claiming to have turned the fan off when it was still running well after service had stopped, and one night a few weeks ago they forgot to turn it off and kept it running all night.

I scheduled an inspection with the Department of Buildings and got an email confirming that it was conducted, and that they did not find any violations. This seems odd since (more…)

I have been around the block a time or two. I am 51 years old and have lived in DC continuously for 29 years and I have never seen this before. Pickled eggs (photo below)? Yes, of course. I remember the days of pickled eggs being sold on ice cream trucks around town. I’m cool with that. 100% But pickled hot dogs? Are these pickled hotdogs? Do you just eat them straight out of the jar? “NCPC approved preliminary site and building plans for a New Monumental Arch located in Memorial Circle at the west terminus of Arlington Memorial Bridge”

“NCPC approved preliminary site and building plans for a New Monumental Arch located in Memorial Circle at the west terminus of Arlington Memorial Bridge, with comments to be addressed prior to final review. Commissioners noted that any structure at this location must balance urban design, visitors’ experience, historic preservation, transportation, and other considerations. Commissioners also requested information regarding impacts to the vehicular transportation network, lighting required by the Federal Aviation Administration, and the final granite cladding selection. NCPC is assessing the Height of Buildings Act and its potential impact on the project, and Commissioners requested that the applicant provide a justification for the project’s height when it returns to NCPC for final review.

Sad news from Cafe Two Nine:

“Hello, everyone. Tomorrow is my last day.

After 10 years of hard work, serious fun, and unforgettable mentorships, Two Nine company will be officially closing my Cafe on Saturday, August 1st. I apologize for the extremely last minute notice and I understand the shock or stress you may be feeling right now. To simply put it, the timing was out of my control no matter how ready I was to share the news. This is NOT THE END. I am still in love with the Hospitality/Food and Bev industry and this Sushi Cafe world I created with my team. All I can do now is start over with a light heart and continue to share these moments right here in DC (more…)

“I’ve seen a single spotted lantern fly this summer.” Have you seen any?

Ed. Note: KNOCK WOOD. Sadly, I’ve seen a bunch. Not massive swarms but at least one or two a day.

Was up on my building’s roof this morning and realized that I don’t think I’ve seen a single spotted lantern fly this summer. They were all over the place on the roof and walking around last year, so I was curious whether the community has noticed a difference as well or if I’ve just been lucky this season. (more…)

“I wanted to share that sadly it looks like Junction Capitol Hill has closed. Neighbors have said there was a rent dispute with Heritage Foundation which owns the building but I am not certain. A big loss for the stretch on Mass Ave – a beloved staff with great food/drink.” (more…)
