A reader writes in about the incident and arrest in case others hadn’t heard yet. I’m not sure how I missed this one. I’m glad to hear an arrest was made:

“My wife and I just bought a house in Petworth, and in looking over the crime reports for the area we saw that there was a homicide at 4211 Second Street. Here is the Police Report and subsequent arrest report.”

Detectives assigned to the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch have announced that an arrest has been made in the homicide of Kevin Massey who was fatally stabbed in the 4200 block of 2nd Street, NW, on November 6, 2009.  At approximately 5:30 am on Wednesday, November 11, 2009, 24-year-old Justin Lee Navarro was arrested in Southwest Washington by members from the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force.  Mr. Navarro of Northwest Washington has been charged with First Degree Murder While Armed pursuant to an arrest warrant in the death of Kevin Massey.

At approximately 11:45 p.m. on Friday, November 6, 2009, officers from the Fourth District responded to the 4200 block of 2nd Street, NW, to investigate the report of a stabbing. Upon arrival, officers discovered an adult male inside of an apartment suffering from apparent multiple stab wounds.  The victim, identified as 31-year-old Kevin Massey, was subsequently pronounced dead on the scene by a representative from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for the District of Columbia.

I walked past this building at Tunlaw and 37th Street.

It is split up into two homes. I think it looks pretty sweet. I know some folks don’t like curb cuts. But overall would you say thumbs up or down?

From CM Jim Graham regarding the horrifying murder of a 9 year old Sat. night on Columbia Road:

“The Mayor and I spoke with the family of Oscar Fuentes this morning. The family and survivors would appreciate donations.

Donations may be sent to my office:

1350 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW
Suite 105
Washington D.C. 20004.

I will send all checks to the family. Checks should be made payable to M. Fuentes.”

I just saw the following on the Columbia Heights Listserv:

“I live in the 1300 block of Girard and got a message in my mailbox over the weekend that there is a meeting this Thursday concerning potentially changing Girard and Euclid (or Fairmont, can’t remember which) into one way streets. Is this seriously under consideration? Anyone have any information?”

This is the first I’ve heard of this so it’s not clear if this under consideration (I’ll see what Graham’s office has to say). But I’m curious if there are any folks who think this would be a good idea?

From time to time folks ask me about any artist workspace living arrangements available in DC. The following sounds like great news! The Cultural Development Corporation reports:

We are working with Union Place Phase I, LLC, to qualify 30 artists, arts administrators, arts educators and their families for affordable artist live/work apartments at 3rd and K, NE, in the NoMa area of Washington, DC. The artist housing units at The Loree Grand will be live/work housing — apartments designed primarily as residential, with studio/work space as an ancillary use. The building will feature studios, one-bedroom, two-bedroom and two-bedroom with den units ranging from 596 to 1362 square feet.

The Loree Grand includes over 200 residential units, a roof garden, a courtyard, a gym and ground floor retail, all within steps of the New York/Florida Avenue Metro Station and Union Station. Individual units include washers and dryers, stainless steel appliances and open floorplans. Construction is under way with occupancy expected mid 2010.

You can find more info here.

This home is located at 3814 33rd Street, Mt. Rainier, MD:

The flier says:

“Charmingly renovated 3BR,2BA home on a quiet street in irresistible & convenient Mount Rainier. EZ access to Metrobus & Metro. High ceilings, great light, hardwoods throughout, large kitchen w/stainless & granite and breakfast room/den, formal DR w/gas fp, bright living room, 3 nicely sized bedrooms, 2 renovated full baths, CAC, W/D, offstreet pkng, large & flat yard.”

More info and photos found here.

A reader writes:

“Hey, I was out in Mt. Rainier the other day and never considered the area when looking for housing, but it’s really quite nice. Anyway, I stumbled across this property when reading through Urban Turf and thought it might make for a good GDON considering Mt. Ranier never comes up.”

I don’t know much about Mt. Rainier but I hear that it is welcoming to artists. Since it’s just over the DC border I’d be interested to hear what folks think about this one. Does $279,000 sound reasonable? Any fans of Mt. Rainier in general?

You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. I’ll open this thread every Monday and Friday. So anything good happen to you this weekend?

From an email:

“As you’re putting together holiday menu ideas for your readers, I wanted to share a great healthy salad created by the founders of organic eatery chain, Sweetgreen (www.sweetgreen.com). A nice balance and/or alternative to any high-calorie holiday meal is this amazing home-cooked baby spinach & mache with honey roasted turkey salad, topped with dried cranberries, and cornbread croutons with a White Balsamic & Black Truffle Vinaigrette.”

I think this sounds pretty tasty. I’ll be honest though, I’ve never heard of mache… We judged Sweetgreen back in June.

Recipe after the jump. (more…)

It was back in Jan. ’08 that Manny & Olga’s first issued a press release about coming to Petworth. At the time they hoped to be open by “Summer 2008”. So I was shocked to walk by the old Hunger Stopper Restaurant at 3624 Georgia Ave. (a few storefronts south of Looking Glass Lounge) and noticed the following sign:

I’m not exactly sure what the “this location available for franchise” means. Are they going to build it first and then sell the franchise or vice versa? It does say coming soon though. You guys think this is a good addition to this section of Georgia Ave.? Remember The Green Room sports bar is still set to come nearby at 3632 Georgia Ave.
