It was back in Jan. ’08 that Manny & Olga’s first issued a press release about coming to Petworth. At the time they hoped to be open by “Summer 2008”. So I was shocked to walk by the old Hunger Stopper Restaurant at 3624 Georgia Ave. (a few storefronts south of Looking Glass Lounge) and noticed the following sign:

I’m not exactly sure what the “this location available for franchise” means. Are they going to build it first and then sell the franchise or vice versa? It does say coming soon though. You guys think this is a good addition to this section of Georgia Ave.? Remember The Green Room sports bar is still set to come nearby at 3632 Georgia Ave.

“Dear PoP,

The photos show a WMATA map posted at the bus stop on 8th and D SE, across from the Eastern Market metro stop. You’ll notice, though, that the map indicates that the bus stop is located on 8th and D NE. This has got to be very confusing for tourists…but amusing for my father-in-law who noticed it after a weekend lunch at Belga Cafe.

Just another proud moment for WMATA, I suppose.”

The reader writes, “Even the “you are here” is wrong…it’s 8 blocks north of where the map is actually displayed.”

A few weeks ago I mentioned that a new burger joint from the folks behind Policy will be coming to 14th and U. A reader just spotted the following alcohol license up on the window. It’s not clear if they’re affiliated but I’ll see what I can find out. The permit says, “New nightclub offering live performances, DJ, and “patron” dancing”. Not sure why it has patron in quotes… It also says the venue will be located in the basement level of the building. Occupancy is 295. So maybe the burger spot will be upstairs?

This mural is by the basketball courts and is so large it’s difficult to get it all in one shot. Part of it even comes off the wall onto the floor:

The mural is sponsored by Words, Beats & Life, the same folks who recently completed the new mural at 14th and Randolph.

The artists commissioned for the Girard Park project are Maxx Moses, Aniekan, and the apprentice is Isaiah Aladejobi.

More photos after the jump. (more…)

A friend of mine loves this house. It’s from Truxton Circle. I think it’s the first rowhouse painted black I’ve ever seen. Do you like the colors?

I received numerous emails about a police presence at 14th and Columbia. Here’s the word from CM Graham:

“I have just returned from a tragic scene at 14th and Columbia. Just before 10 PM, a nine year old boy was shot dead in the presumed safety of his apartment at 1433 Columbia Road. AT this time, it appears that there was some kind of fight in the hallway, shots were fired, one of which entered the apartment and killed this boy. I have the name of the boy (who happens to be Latino) but I am not releasing it since I do not know whether the entire family has been notified.

Chief Lanier and Mayor Fenty–who were both on the scene– stated that there are persons in custody.

MDP was out in force in the neighborhood, it being an All Hands on Deck weekend. Police were on the scene immediately.”

And in other CH crime news there seems to have been a huge police presence near Wonderland at 11th and Kenyon. A reader writes:

“Passed by Wonderland Ballroom about an hour ago (around 8:30pm Sat. night) and there were 4-5 police cars (some unmarked) with a healthy amount of uniformed and plain-clothes officers.”

There is some speculation among readers that it may have been a drug bust robbery with 3 suspects arrested. A very sad night all around. More details as they become available.
