“We have 42 bands on 5 stages, good food, beer, wine – and community”

From an email:

Appaloosa is DC’s (only) Roots Music Festival – now going in to our second year.

We host our festival in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, in Front Royal, VA on Labor Day Weekend (September 3-4), and have 42 bands on 5 stages, good food, beer, wine – and community. The adults have fun (our headliners include Scythian, The Black Lillies, Mipso, Humming House, Penny & Sparrow, and Socks in the Frying Pan) as do the kids, with children under 13 coming free, and workshops by headliners, camping, and horseback riding. Also – we have late-night jams, discounts for active duty military and veterans, and 10% goes to charity. As for sponsors – we have The Hamilton Live sponsoring our main stage, as well as Starr Hill Brewery, Bold Rock Hard Cider, and WAMU Bluegrass Country, among others. We like to consider the community we’re building, as “Music Among Friends.”

  • How is this a “DC” festival if it’s held all the way out in Front Royal?

  • Appaloosa is like the early years of Kingman Island Festival — smallish (a few thousand) but solid. At the age of 32, I’m worn and weary of big music festivals. Just give me that fresh mountain air and good beer and life is just about right.

    • Then you should go some place like this: http://furpeaceranch.com/ rather than a festival in the land of stripmalls. Their concerts sell out almost immediately.

The land of strip malls??? This is like 75 miles west of DC, at a campground out in the middle of nowhere. There are more strip malls in DC than there are anywhere close to this place. Really, there’s a lot of cool stuff out there that isn’t in Shaw.

        • Front Royal has a lot of strip malls, and not much else, in my experience. The festival isn’t actually in Front Royal, either though. The website says “just outside of,” but I don’t blame anyone for thinking of strip malls when they think of Front Royal.

          • Have you actually been into downtown Front Royal? Not even close to strip malls. A little touristy, sure, because of Shenandoah, but most mountain towns are nowadays.

  • Ain’t no DC music festival. Double bubble that’s false advertising. Insert lip snarl

  • Sad I’m going out of town this weekend, this looks cool.

  • This would actually be a good two-fer with a hiking or canoe/tubing trip at Shenandoah National Park or Shenandoah River State Park, Dinosaur Land, Skyline Caverns, the drive-in in Stephens City, lots to do out there!
