There is a media preview early next week for the new Dupont Beafsteak location – so they’ll likely be open to the public this week or early next week. You can see their menu here. The Foggy Bottom location opened back in March. Stay tuned for an exact date for the Dupont location. Update: “The restaurant opens to the public on September 29.”

Back in July we shared some scuttlebutt that popular vegetarian taco seller Chaia could be looking for a permanent brick and mortar space in Georgetown. Chaia now confirms the good news with an exact location on theirfacebook page:

“Chaia will open our first shop at 3207 Grace Street NW in Georgetown! We’re excited to serve a larger selection of our seasonal tacos with crafted sides and natural drinks. See you in 2015!

A couple weeks ago we learned a Chop’t was coming to the Navy Memorial Plaza next to the Paul bakery. More food options are coming to the plaza. Native Foods Café is coming to the vacant space next to 701 Restaurant.

According a liquor license application:

“Restaurant serving vegan food with a seating capacity for 66 and total occupancy load of 98. Side Café with 40 seats.”

Hours will be 10:30 am – 11 pm Monday-Sunday.

According to their website:

“Native Foods Café is the premier chef-crafted vegan restaurant serving homemade, fresh food every day of the week. Native Foods Cafe has attracted acclaim in Zagat, USA Today, VegNews and numerous other publications.”

You can see their Menus here.

And for those who remember the space that used to have the good pizza on the other side of the plaza – It’s going to be a Plan B Burger Bar. Washington Business Journal reported:

“The burger-centric restaurant and bar has signed a lease for retail space at 801 Pennsylvania Ave. NW. It will be the group’s first restaurant outside of New England.”

Their website says they offer beef, burgers, bourbon and beer. You can see their full menus here.

Updates as both spots get closer to opening.

“Hey PoP!

I was wondering if I could submit a question to your readers. I have a friend visiting in mid-July who was asking me for vegetarian or veggie-friendly restaurant recommendations. I’m not a vegetarian so not always on the lookout for places with good veggie options. What do your readers recommend as far as restaurants with lots of vegetarian choices?”

If you know of places with good vegetarian options please also say what neighborhood it is in. Thanks.

Here were the recommendations for best expensive, BBQ, tapas, bar to watch football, wine bar, Chinese, Latino/Mexican, hidden restaurants, Italian, Sushi, Indian, falafel, Ethiopian, Middle Eastern and Steak.

Maoz is located at 1817 M Street, NW. Their Web site says:

“Maoz Vegetarian is an international, quick service vegetarian restaurant chain, which brought to the world the delicious Maoz sandwich: FALAFEL. Our menu is strictly vegetarian and is based on simplicity, freshness and care. Our famous Maoz sandwich is home baked pita bread filled with crispy, handmade Falafel balls which are made from chickpeas, a vitamin rich legume, packed with plenty of proteins, minerals and vitamin B. The chickpeas are blended daily with fresh spices and vegetables and then fried in zero trans-fat Canola oil. All of our salads and sauces are freshly prepared every day using handpicked ingredients to assure superior quality and freshness.”

How long has this spot been open? Any fans?

This is sad news. A reader writes:

“Hey there, have you heard anything about rumors of Vegetate (1414 9th Street, NW), the veggie place by 9th and O, closing on Nov. 28? The scuttlebutt is that the landlord is tripling their rent.”

We judged Vegetate back in Dec. ’08 and there were lots of fans. Today the CCCA blog shares a note from the owners:

“We’re writing with some unfortunate news. Vegetate on 9th Street is going to be closing at the end of this month. Our lease is up and we’ve decided to look for a new location.

We will let all of you know once we’ve found a new space. In the meantime, we’ll be doing select catered events.

Thank you for all your support over the years. Those of you in the area, please stop by for one last dinner at Vegetate’s 9th Street home.

Best,
Dominic & Jennifer”

Here’s to hoping they find a new spot soon!
