Thanks to Bridget for sending the photo: “MM Lafleur opening tomorrow at Union Station in the spot previously occupied by Swarovski”

From a press release:

“Traveling for work can be a drag–but M.M.LaFleur’s newest store in D.C., M.M. To Go, is here to help. Opening on Friday, February 7, the 930-square-foot concept shop is located in Union Station, on the ground floor next to the Amtrak ticket station, and directly across from Magnolia Bakery (we know!) “Dear PoPville,

I’m sure you remember hearing the story back in 2018 of the young homeless kid who was being confronted by police with a gun, and then saved by a woman – Anthony Williams.

A go fund me was set up, that raised over $25k.

I contributed and often looked back to find out more about how his life may be going, but never found much. (more…)

In addition to the shooting in Park View which is now a homicide the following also occurred yesterday.

From MPD:

“Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch are investigating a homicide that occurred on Sunday, January 26, 2020, in the Unit Block of N Street, Southwest.

At approximately 2:15 pm, members of the First District responded to the rear of the listed location for the report of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers located a male, suffering from gunshot wounds. This weekend I noticed the Georgetown store was having store closing sales. Didn’t realize it was the whole chain. Oof, I’d say I buy 75% of my cards here :(

CNN reports this morning: “Schurman Fine Paper, which owns the brand, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy Thursday in a Delaware court. The company is closing all 254 of its US and Canada stores. More than 1,000 employees will lose their jobs.”

I think they have a Union Station location too. So where to buy card now?

“Dear PoPville,

Sad to say that I saw the 2 $10s for a $20 scam in action on the platform at Union Station today. I was about 15 feet away and on an important call and wasn’t 100% sure I had correctly recalled this as a scam so I didn’t intervene.

Only when the tricked guy and I both got on the train did I think to google “PoPville $20” – and sure enough, it pulled up the picture of the guy and his walker. It’s done so, so adeptly – and the man really does appear disabled and in-need – that I frankly doubted my own memory and hesitated on intervening. I showed the scammed guy the picture. He actually reacted pretty graciously (“Well I hope he needed it more than I do.”).”

From the Attorney General’s Office:

“Attorney General Karl A. Racine today filed a lawsuit against Greyhound Lines Inc. for allowing buses to idle at Union Station for longer than the legal limit, polluting the air and endangering the health and safety of commuters and workers. A joint investigation by the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) and the Department of Energy and Environment (DOEE) documented 50 Greyhound buses parked, stopped, or standing at Union Station with their engines running for longer than the three-minute legal limit, many for more than 20 minutes. With this lawsuit, OAG is seeking to collect at least $216,000 in penalties, reimbursement for costs of the investigation, and a court order to stop Greyhound from violating the District’s air pollution control laws moving forward.
