Collard Greens Shortage Hits Florida Avenue Grill!!!

This is not a drill. And it’s no joke – climate change is to blame:

“You can clearly seen the impacts of the 2018 wet weather pattern and the influence of Hurricanes Florence and Hurricane Michael, respectively. Many of the places in blue (very wet) on that map are places that grow collard greens. Flooding and field inundation in Texas and the southeastern United States reduced crop yields and forced farmers to harvest early. Collard greens are also grown in California, which experienced significant challenges from Santa Ana wind-driven fires. Growers report torn leaves and scarring.” (more…)

Just went for a walk around the tidal basin, and there’s a fence up around the cherry trees. A nice park ranger told me the the trees were in bad shape, and so they were treating and protecting the soil to allow them to recover.

Sounds reasonable, but I wouldn’t want to be on that path this weekend. Something to keep in mind.”

“Dear PoPville,

Tuesday evening (3/27) around 8:30pm, I was walking NW on Adams Mill Road toward the zoo, on the west side of the street. I noticed four young men come out of Walter Pierce Park behind me and follow me. Since it was not particularly late, I wasn’t concerned at first, but looking back, I noticed that they all wore parka hoodies and had the hoods pulled up over their heads, and they weren’t speaking. The street was getting darker as I walked down the hill past Ontario Road, and I decided against putting my earbuds in so I could focus on what was happening behind me, as it appeared they were walking quickly, catching up to me. “DC Water’s switch to chlorine from chloramine happened yesterday. everything smells like a pool today.”

DC Water’s website says:

“From March 25 through May 6, 2019, the disinfectant in drinking water will temporarily switch from chloramine to chlorine. During this time, you may notice a slight change in the taste and smell of your drinking water.

DC Water purchases treated drinking water from the Washington Aqueduct. Each year, the Aqueduct switches disinfectants from chloramine back to chlorine to clean our  water distribution system and improve water quality. (more…)

“Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Sexual Assault Unit are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying a suspect in reference to a Fourth Degree Sexual Abuse offense that occurred on Sunday, March 17, 2019, in the 1600 block of Irving Street, Northwest.

At approximately 1:15 am, the victim entered what she believed was a vehicle for hire in the 900 block of U Street Northwest. While inside of the suspect’s vehicle, the suspect inappropriately touched the victim in the 1600 block of Irving Street Northwest. The victim exited the vehicle and the suspect fled the scene.

The suspect’s vehicle is described as a white four door sedan.

Anyone who has knowledge of this incident should take no action but call police at (202) 727-9099 or text your tip to the Department’s TEXT TIP LINE at 50411.”

“So, if people’s tax returns are being corrected from the amount due from the tax table, that’s the story I received.”

“Dear PoPville,

So, I got a correction to my DC individual tax return for 2018, which included a one dollar adjustment (in DC’s favor) to my total tax. I wanted to know what was up with that.

Reviewing my calculations & the tax table, I saw that I did not make a mistake. I used the correct figure. Their “correction” appeared to be incorrect based on the tax table in the instructions booklet. I was like, hey, no, don’t do that–it’s not the amount, it’s the “don’t make stuff up,” ye Tax Department, principle. (more…)

Just wanted to put a PSA out there so no one repeats my dumb mistake.

The TL;DR: never ever, ever ever use Zelle or Venmo to buy stuff off craigslist until you’ve got the thing in hand. They don’t have payment protection. Paypal does.

Anyway, I decided to try and get some last minute tickets to Fleetwood Mac tonight. Went on Craigslist to buy tickets. Messaged this legit-seeming post. The tickets in the post said “Mike” on them. The person texted like a Dad. It seemed legit until…they asked if I had Zelle. I thought it was weird. Their excuse was “Unfortunately they hold payments on new accounts for 21 days which is absurd.” Something about the word “absurd” seemed real to me. Almost disarming. You’re right! It is absurd. But they wouldn’t go along to get along: they refused to send the ticket before I sent payment despite my offer to send a drivers license picture. There were too many flags. I let the conversation end there.

Reader, I’d love to tell you that I, having learned my lesson and stopped right here.

You had mentioned the old Chinese restaurant closing (between 13th & 14th street–the one in the basement) and becoming a new Caribbean restaurant. I just tried the place and the food is great! Its a small mom and pop place (nothing fancy) but good food. I’m South Asian and for those who like and grew up eating goat curry, it has amazing goat curry.

Please post so they can get some business! With all the big fancy restaurants opening up on U street it would be great to see this mom and pop place do well!”

I know you’ve posted about stuff like this before, but I was hoping you might want to post again. I’m pregnant and a biker almost hit me in the crosswalk this morning crossing 18th street at G st. He was going full speed toward a red light. I cursed him out but I know the woman who was killed by a biker a couple years ago and I feel like it’s time for a reminder that bikes need to follow the rules of the road.”
