“When we lived in Ward 2 (zone 2), we had figured out where the non-street sweeping spots were. However, after moving a few blocks away to Ward 1 (zone 1) we haven’t found any spots that have no street-cleaning and have a week long trip coming up where we won’t be able to move the car for street cleaning. Any suggestions for non-street cleaning spots in DC’s smallest Ward (Ward 1/Zone 1)?”

“Dear PoPville,

A ward 8 council member with the car in the photos was parked two blocks from Eastern Market on Capital Hill this past Monday night (approximately 7 pm). They were using their official parking permit to park and do not have a residential parking permit despite having DC tags. Is this allowed? Was he/she on official business? Is this an abuse of the permit?”

As we’ve discussed many times in the past, from the DC Code:

“Members of Congress or the Council may park their vehicles in any available curb space in the District of Columbia, when:

(1) The vehicle is used by the member of Congress or the Council on official business;

(2) The vehicle is displaying a Congressional or Council registration tag or parking placard issued for the current session or by the District; and

(3) The vehicle is not parked in violation of a loading zone, rush hour, firehouse, or fire plug limitation.”

It certainly seems possible that they could have been attending a meeting Monday night but it’s really impossible to know for sure.

Ed. Note: For the record I also continue to get Ward 2 Council Member “illegal” parking spot photos pretty regularly.

contradictory parking signs

Last week Andrew sent us the great photo above from 2nd and D St SE between Folger and Providence Park:

“DC Parking Enforcement can’t be bothered to abide by the laws they enforce.”

J Coleman noted the classic contradictory signage. But props to DPW, DC311 and DDOT who have coordinated to fix this sign.

But still…

parking

Ed. Note: Now it may have been because I drank a giant bottle of cider but I just couldn’t stop laughing when looking at the bottom sign.

OP writes:

“After living in DC for 18 years this is the most confusing parking sign I’ve seen yet. On K Street.”

This was DPW’s response:

The signs means that after 6:30 pm you may pay to park for more than 2 hours (you can pay for the remaining 3 1/2 hours, during day time hours you can only park on those particular meters for two hours. The signs let citizens know that the meters are still in effect until 10 pm but you do not have to pay after 10:00pm

“…which still doesn’t make sense to me, as the “Loading Zone” sign states that there is no day time parking.”

“I have no parking signs for a moving truck next Tuesday, June 28. All this week, our street has had no parking signs for tree work, and that was supposed to run through the 24th. I went out there this morning, and all of the tree work signs now say it’s scheduled for the 27th-July 1.

I’ve tried calling the number on our permit multiple times and leave message after message, but I’m wondering if anyone knows what I can do. Can I just put up my signs along the others and keep a copy of the permit on the dash? Or does the tree work supersede everything.”

parking signs

“Dear PoPville,

I noticed from my window (Friday @ 8:24pm) people were posting signs. I couldn’t see what the signs said from my window but I took a picture of them anyway. This morning [Saturday] on my way to the airport I checked out the signs. They are all down the 1300 block of R st NW for “emergency” no parking with a reason “Shinola Detroit block party” starting Saturday at 9:30.

Can individuals really post signs 12 hours in advance for a “party” and subject citizens to ticket and towing charges and fines?”

“Dear PoPville,

I thought I’d share a somewhat amusing, but also incredibly annoying thing that happened to me this morning. I live on Capitol Hill and walk out to my car around 6:15 this morning to see that the driver’s side window has been smashed in. After checking through the car, the cash, the iPhone cables, the Barbour jacket were all still there–the only thing stolen was… the Visitor Parking Permit.”

Ed. Note: The OP also knows not to leave cash, iPhone cables, and jackets in the car.

“Hoping someone can help out a temporary car owner with a very stupid/basic question about street parking in the city. Searched the forum but seems no one else had the same level of ignorance.

If there’s a street with no parking signs whatsoever, except the ones at the end of the block saying “no parking beyond this point,” can anyone park there indefinitely? Or is there an unspoken but ticketable rule about residents-only or street cleaning or anything else?

Any advice here is much appreciated.”

Local newspaper, The Washington Post has the insane details:

“After handing over the [license] plates to police and being charged with three counts of misdemeanor theft, Whitman, 58, agreed to a deal on Tuesday that would lead to the case’s dismissal if he pays $1,000 in restitution, performs 32 hours of community service, remains out of trouble for the next 10 months, and stays away both from the nanny and the woman for whom she works.

The strange series of events could be viewed as the latest example of the District’s perpetual parking wars, except residents say parking isn’t a problem on their streets and that many babysitters use the visitor passes.

The couple soon realized that Whitman is their neighbor. He lives just around the corner.”

You gotta read the whole story.

“Dear PoPville,

We had made dinner reservations and were having a hard time finding parking. We were five minutes past our reservation time so we decided to just pull into a garage and park. It was an early dinner because of some travel, so a lot of the street parking wasn’t open yet.

At first we didn’t see anyone in the attendant booth at the garage, and then we saw the attendant stand up. He was clearly doing his evening prayers as he bent back down again and so forth a few times. (more…)
