901 New York Avenue, NW
Last week we shared the good news (for those who work/live nearby) that Bagels and Baguettes was reportedly reopening at 901 New York Ave, NW just north of City Center and west of Mount Vernon Square (where the Apple store is coming) and the Convention Center. I took a walk to see where exactly it might be and hadn’t realized that Lawson’s Grill had closed:

Nice score for Penn Quarter. Stay tuned for confirmation/exact opening date.

looking east towards Acadiana and Mount Vernon Square.

“A coworker told me that a new location of Rice Bar had popped up near my workplace and I went today to check it out. The employees said that it opened last Monday and I heard a lot of people in the store say “I had no idea this was here!” So it seems like they didn’t get the word out enough (and should! Rice Bar is awesome). 1206 G St NW across from the Macy’s.”
Ed. Note: Rice Bar also has locations at 1015 15th St NW, 1020 19th St NW, 600 Maryland Ave SW and 409 3rd St SW (and one is coming to Crystal City too.) You can see their full menus here.

Veloce opened up back in May 2015. Veloce was “a quick service pizza restaurant from the acclaimed culinary talent behind Pizzeria Paradiso.”
Fortunately Pret A Manger remains open:

9th Street Italian Hoagie courtesy Taylor Gourmet
From an email:
“Taylor Gourmet opens location number 15 today at 888 17th Street, NW. To celebrate the opening the first 88 hoagie lovers to get in line will receive a FREE regular size hoagie AND a Taylor Gourmet custom t-shirt! Guests can choose from classic hoagies and salads like the 9th Italian, Ben Franklin (our take on a chicken parmesan) and Cumberland (Vegan sensation) and the critically acclaimed, “saved” Logan Salad. Or seasonal favorites like, T. Harrison (hand-rolled spicy meatballs, Mom’s house marinara, sweet provolone, banana pepper, fresh basil, crispy onion) or the Big Willie Style (pepper crusted roast beef, creamy brie, derby sauce, frisee, crispy onion, olive oil).
WHEN: 11am-7pm”

Thanks to a reader for passing on the report from NBC Washington:
“The D.C. government has ordered the shutdown of three Five Guys restaurants in the city because the owners failed to pay sales taxes, officials say.
The locations ordered to close are at 1400 I St. NW, near the McPherson Square Metro station; at 1300 Second St. NE, near the NoMa-Gallaudet U Metro station; and in L’Enfant Plaza.”

Union Market, Adams Morgan, Cleveland Park and now Downtown too! The pizzeria is coming to the briefly open Black Iron space around 13th and E St, NW around the corner from the Warner Theatre. Side note: Can anyone explain why this building has a Pennsylvania Ave address when it is located on E Street?
City Paper reports:
“Cucina Al Volo Pizzeria will serve Roman-style “al taglio” pizza. It’s sold in Italy in giant squares by the pound and is most similar to thick, Sicilian-style pie.”
Standby for opening dates for here and Cleveland Park.

Technically 1299 Pennsylvania Ave, NW but entrance actually on E Street

Back in September we learned that Maison Kayser was coming to 7th and Mass Ave, NW. Looks like another one is coming to F Street too – across from the National Press building between 13th and 14th. My people familiar with Maison Kayser tell me that this is very good news indeed.
Check out some of their menus here. Stay tuned for opening dates.
