We’ve said it before and we’ll no doubt say it again: How great is Jose Andres?
“Since March 16, 2020, we have provided 15,000 nutritious meals to D.C’s most underserved populations. Starting today, Meals For The City will be powered by @WCKitchen and @ChefJoseAndres. They’ve created a model to transform restaurants into community kitchens to bring people back to work; they’ve served over 3 million meals to vulnerable communities and frontline workers across the country since this pandemic turned our lives upside down. Moving forward, we’ll serve 15,000 more and we will get through this together, one meal at time.”
Big News! WCK is committing to purchase 1 million meals from small, local restaurants — bringing them back (safely) to do what they love. WCK will then deliver those meals with partners to families, seniors, healthcare workers & more #ChefsForAmerica https://t.co/qo7YQELz9y pic.twitter.com/RXdEkOP2Dz

And from an email: “Reaching out to share some exciting additions to our ThinkFoodGroup pick-up and delivery options.
Bodegas – Starting today we will operate “Bodegas” out of our Beefsteak locations in Foggy Bottom and Dupont, adding an additional one at Jaleo DC on Monday.
These markets are intended to connect the community to staple items such as eggs, milk and flour along with household goods like cleaning solutions, paper towels and hand sanitizer, all of which have become scarce during the COVID-19 Pandemic. (more…)

From a press release:
“In response to the increasing risk of the COVID-19 coronavirus and to help encourage social distancing to stop its spread, Chef José Andrés and ThinkFoodGroup announced they will temporarily close all of their restaurants in the Washington, D.C., area and New York City as of today, March 15, and repurpose most of them as “community kitchens” with affordable plates of the day available for takeout purchase.
Said TFG Co-Founder Jose Andres, “We are in a serious global emergency and people need to take every precaution, including staying home as much as possible. However, we also want to help provide food for those who want it in a safe manner, so we feel these community kitchens can help during this challenging time. And those who cannot afford to pay we will welcome as well.”
The community kitchens will operate out of the restaurants’ side doors with a limited number of volunteers from 12 – 5 pm daily beginning Tuesday, March 17, offering only takeout service. All restaurant employees will be provided with paid leave and current health benefits for at least the first two weeks.

The offer will last until the end of the furlough

So if a shutdown does happen, as is looking likely, how long do you think this one will last? Much longer as the president suggests in his tweet.
