Thanks to Kim for sending during Friday’s monsoon:
“Spotted around noon in Dupont outside the CVS. This guy bought human poncho for his dog and Macgyver-ed it into a doggie poncho. Melted my heart.”

A reader reports just after 12:30pm: “Trash fire at the new sylvan bakery.”
And in all seriousness, I hope the fire didn’t damage the bakery too badly. And serious props to all who responded.

Rebecca Menes, a 13 year Logan Circle resident, writes:
“What did you do on Easter Sunday? Maybe you went to church, had an Easter egg hunt with your children, or enjoyed brunch with friends. Not for the DC Fire and EMS Department, who gave up their holiday to help people in a pickle, and that included me. Stuck on an elevator between floors in the Rainbow Lofts residential building on Church St. NW with no consolation but my bags of defrosting groceries, this rescue squad was there in no time flat. My neighbors had rushed to the scene, as well as my best friend (a former journalist) who understood the importance of the moment and snapped some pics. But it was six of our city’s finest who pried open the elevator door and brought me and my groceries to safety.
I considered for a moment to pretend to be in tears — or at least ready to swoon from the heat into those trustworthy arms — but I thought better about it when these able professionals extricated me with little fuss. I was only able to shake one of their hands before they rushed off to help another innocent victim somewhere in the city.
Thank you, DC Fire and EMS Department, for being there when I needed you most.”
Thanks to a reader for sending Saturday night:
“I don’t know who this guy is, or why he was doing what he was doing…All I know is that as he bounded down the hill from the Washington Monument belting along with Bon Jovi carrying extra on his shoulders with the American flag waving triumphantly in the twilight as he wound his way around the reflecting pool towards Lincoln, there wasn’t a single person he passed who wasn’t taken out of their own mind for a few moments to look up and smile. We were all one–and I’m totally down with that cool.”

A reader nominates:
“The picture sucks but the effort was fantastic. I nominate these guys for your “heroes” series. Spotted at Georgia and Eastern last Friday.”

“Dear PoPville,
My wife and I attended a Unified Scene Theater (Improv theater in Bloomingdale) show last Friday June 5 and proceeded to head to Washington Hospital Center after a quick stop at home, and had our (first) baby early on the morning on the 6th. I met the theater owner, Shawn, before the show and followed-up with him after the birth because we left half-way through the show and I wanted to let him know why!
Shawn and Kathy from the theater then sent us a very generous Amazon gift card and said we can come back for a free show. I was very touched by this. Having a baby is pretty overwhelming, and experiencing random acts of kindness from strangers goes a long way in helping us think “This is going to be OK!”.
This is a great example of the capacity of local businesses and neighbors to create community and connections through small acts, and I’d love for this story and Shawn and Kathy’s generosity to reach a broader audience. They are Unsung Heroes in my book!
NOTE that Shawn/Kathy sent on the Amazon gift card:

“Remember this tree near the Petworth playground on 8th? It was chopped down and left for dead… but not this tree. Growing strong… and this picture is from a while ago. Everytime I see it, it reminds me what resilience is all about….”

Been a minute since I had the opportunity to nominate another unsung hero. Can’t say I’ve seen someone take this shortcut before. Not sure the photos do it justice but that hill is really steep. This connects Rock Creek Parkway to Georgetown.

A reader witnessed:
“This morning, I was heading out for a run going west down Rhode Island. As I was approaching 7th, a tow truck turned right from 7th onto Rhode Island with a blue pick-up truck being towed in back. Shortly after it turned, a big bearded guy with a flannel shirt on turned the corner at full sprint, right in the road. I mean, he was HAULING. He actually caught up to the tow truck and managed to hop into the driver’s seat of the blue truck being towed, coffee cup still in hand. It couldn’t tell if it was from Compass Coffee, but given the location, I like to think it was.
Of course, once the tow truck hitches up your car, there’s no talking them out of a tow. But at least he found the most efficient way to get to the lot, and still had his morning coffee.”
