“Dear PoPville,

Last night, after making the mistake of going to the Trader Joe’s in Foggy Bottom (and waiting in line for 45 minutes), I had to make my way back to Eckington. After several bus plans fell through because they never showed up, my phone died and I decided to make my way to Chinatown to take the P6. Conditions were awful and at 7th & H a man fell in the middle of the street – I helped him up only to have him say a few pervy things to me. Classic DC.

All of this made for a really crappy and cold night. Then my grocery bag ripped at the bus stop that I ended up standing at for 30 minutes. I want to say THANK YOU to a man named Roger who ran across the street to Walgreens to get me a few plastic bags that I could put my groceries in. This was one of my worst DC commutes (it took 2.5 hours to go about 4 miles), but he reminded me that some people are really good. Roger – if you see this thank you from the bottom of my heart – I will pay it forward.”

Maybe she works near Foggy Bottom? Or the grocery stores near her are inconvenient to get to.

  • Caroline

Probably because she wanted something specific to Trader Joe’s. People are hopelessly devoted to their products, from what I’ve heard.
This is a good reminder to always have a reusable bag or two in your purse. They’re so much easier to haul around.

JFC! This story is about someone thanking a kind stranger and you have to wonder why she didn’t hit a grocery store closer to home!? Who knows, there could be a million reasons!

    • seriously?

JFC#2. Geez. Maybe she has mobility challenges, or the groceries were heavy, or she works near Trader Joe’s but is a long walk from another well-stocked store (reference all the people saying their market was out of milk/eggs/whatever early). Or maybe we can just acknowledge her acknowledgement without cynicism today?

Woman writes in to thank a kind stranger. A half dozen people criticize her choices with no context or backstory. Classic.

  • Bag Lady

The real villain in this story are the cheap flimsy bags that Trader Joe’s uses! Seriously, I’ve never seen a cashier NOT double them, and even then the handles break off very easily. Can’t they just manufacture a sturdier bag?

  • Chinatown

Sorry about your crappy night, OP. Way to be a hero, Roger!

  • Curious George

Lovely story! This was happening all over the city yesterday. We saw several folks helping push cars, and offering encouraging words, and helping bikers who had slipped over, etc etc. The city is full of wonderful people. ;)

  • Clueless

I hope to be somebody’s “Roger” one day.

  • This probably won’t get posted

I still want to know what JFC means!

  • SWChick

Thank you Roger. I needed a feel good story.

  • nightborn

    yeah Roger!

    Way to go Roger.
The question I have is about the pervy guy who fell in the street. I can only hope he was in a crosswalk and slipped. Not that he decided to abandon the sidewalk and instead amble along in the part of the public thoroughfare that’s usually for, you know, CARS. So many clowns in this city seem to think the streets are made for walking when it snows. WTF people!?! Just because it’s snowing do you think there’s a magic force field to protect you from skidding cars driven by insane maniacs from Maryland? Stay on the freaking sidewalk unless you’re crossing at a crosswalk! And then please turn off your instagram and look both ways!
