“Dear PoPville,

While I was running this morning, I got hit by a car. She didn’t see me at an intersection. I am banged up but nothing terrible. I’m writing you because I hope the people who helped me will read this. A woman running as well (she introduced herself as Gigi) turned around and scooped me up off the ground. She hugged me so hard and just let me cry on her. The kindness of this complete stranger floored me. She is an incredible human, and we need more of her in this world. Several others stopped to help. One woman called my husband and gave me her coat, another rushed to her house to get blankets. It’s easy to get caught up in the political gloom that looms over our city right now, but there are good, actually great, individuals out there, and I am so thankful some of them were there to help me out this morning.”

“Dear PoPville,

I wanted to say thank you to the two men who intervened and stood-up for me on my metro commute this morning [Tuesday]. We were on the first train car heading from Chinatown to Farragut North (red line) at around 8:40 and you stopped a very aggressive man from accosting me and yelling at me repeatedly that I was a “f**king b**ch who thinks I’m better than him”. I didn’t get the chance to properly say thank you – so if you are reading this just know you were both so kind and understanding! Thank you and I hope your commute was much less eventful afterwards.”

Thanks to Anna for passing on from the Brightwood Listserv:

“Fellow Neighbors,

I found a Knoxville College class of 1985 graduation ring on the streets of downtown DC, near the Washington Monument, next to a food truck tire.

The name engraved on the interior says, Cheryl A. Essex.

Through simple research, I found that Cheryl may have been a law enforcement officer, is originally from Washington, DC but currently lives in Maryland.

Since DC is a huge networking society, I decided to reach out on here.

I’m hoping this message can be shared, or tips can be given.

I know what it’s like to lose something valuable.

I want to give her the ring back!

Help me find her!

Best,
Emily”

If you are/know Cheryl please email [email protected] and I’ll put you in touch with Emily.

“Dear PoPville,

Its that time of year again! We are collecting handmade holiday cards for the residents of the Old Soldiers Home/ Armed Forces Retirement home here in DC. If you know an adult, office, child, daycare, or school that would be interested in making holiday cards to bring some joy to these individuals who have spent years or a lifetime in service to all of us, please spread the word and help us hand out a card to every retired soldier we can this holiday season. Last year we handed out over 600 hugely appreciated holiday cards from all over the country. The cards are delivered along with some hugs, singing and lots of holiday cheer. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I recently got a new bike and got my old one tuned up so it would be in good shape to sell. I decided I’d much rather donate it or give it away to someone in need. I wanted to see if there is anyone in the PoPville community in need–loosely defined, but perhaps someone who had their bike stolen and depends on it for transportation and just doesn’t have it in the budget to replace. It’s a women’s hybrid Fuji, with photo attached. Not sure of the size, but I’m 5’6″ and would fit someone well if they were around the same height or taller.”

Update: A lot of folks need bikes :( sorry if I didn’t respond right away, there was an overwhelming response.

“Dear PoPville,

Background: A really bad thing happened to me yesterday, June 28. About 7:55 in the morning, I was in the crosswalk on the south side of Sherman Circle, heading to Illinois Ave., when a speeding SUV nearly hit me. I had a split second to decide what to do, and chose to leap back toward the Circle to avoid being hit; unfortunately, that meant leaping onto the sidewalk face first. End result is a broken nose, lost front tooth, and too many cuts, scrapes and soft tissue damage to discuss, but all, thankfully. will heal (and I have good insurance).

I wanted to write to you to give kudos to all the people who immediately came to my assistance. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

Early yesterday afternoon [Thursday] I was walking my four dogs around Cap Hill near Lincoln Park when the leash unclasped out of the blue and my Chihuahua mix, Thor, ran off.

After taking off at full speed into East Capitol Street at the park he was hit by a car and caused me, and probably everyone watching in horror, a great deal of panic. It looked just awful, and he immediately dashed off from the street and out of sight.

Amazingly, he ended up running all the way home (a few blocks from the park; to our house where we have only been a few weeks!)

Since he ran off, no one at the scene knew the outcome of the situation and I didn’t get a chance to properly thank the incredibly kind biker that held on to my other three dogs while I desperately chased Thor. I also hope the poor driver of the car somehow gets the word that the dog is ok, and miraculously suffered no injuries (other than some slightly scraped paws).

My most sincere thanks to everyone who tried to herd the dog out of the street and especially to the amazing guy on the bike! I was scared out of my mind and I don’t know what I would have done without the assistance of these kind strangers.

I have ordered some secure screw-clasp leashes and will be reinforcing the “come” command about a hundred times a day from now on.
