“Good people in DC free cold water thanks to fam in Foggy Bottom. Refuge on this hot day!”

“Dear PoPville,
I recently got a new bike and got my old one tuned up so it would be in good shape to sell. I decided I’d much rather donate it or give it away to someone in need. I wanted to see if there is anyone in the PoPville community in need–loosely defined, but perhaps someone who had their bike stolen and depends on it for transportation and just doesn’t have it in the budget to replace. It’s a women’s hybrid Fuji, with photo attached. Not sure of the size, but I’m 5’6″ and would fit someone well if they were around the same height or taller.”
Update: A lot of folks need bikes :( sorry if I didn’t respond right away, there was an overwhelming response.

“Dear PoPville,
Background: A really bad thing happened to me yesterday, June 28. About 7:55 in the morning, I was in the crosswalk on the south side of Sherman Circle, heading to Illinois Ave., when a speeding SUV nearly hit me. I had a split second to decide what to do, and chose to leap back toward the Circle to avoid being hit; unfortunately, that meant leaping onto the sidewalk face first. End result is a broken nose, lost front tooth, and too many cuts, scrapes and soft tissue damage to discuss, but all, thankfully. will heal (and I have good insurance).
I wanted to write to you to give kudos to all the people who immediately came to my assistance. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,
Early yesterday afternoon [Thursday] I was walking my four dogs around Cap Hill near Lincoln Park when the leash unclasped out of the blue and my Chihuahua mix, Thor, ran off.
After taking off at full speed into East Capitol Street at the park he was hit by a car and caused me, and probably everyone watching in horror, a great deal of panic. It looked just awful, and he immediately dashed off from the street and out of sight.
Amazingly, he ended up running all the way home (a few blocks from the park; to our house where we have only been a few weeks!)
Since he ran off, no one at the scene knew the outcome of the situation and I didn’t get a chance to properly thank the incredibly kind biker that held on to my other three dogs while I desperately chased Thor. I also hope the poor driver of the car somehow gets the word that the dog is ok, and miraculously suffered no injuries (other than some slightly scraped paws).
My most sincere thanks to everyone who tried to herd the dog out of the street and especially to the amazing guy on the bike! I was scared out of my mind and I don’t know what I would have done without the assistance of these kind strangers.
I have ordered some secure screw-clasp leashes and will be reinforcing the “come” command about a hundred times a day from now on.

“Dear PoPville,
I am a DC Police Officer and I am trying to find the nice couple that paid for our food earlier today [Thursday] at approximately 1600 hours, in the Mi Cuba Cafe restaurant at 1424 Park Rd. NW. The waitress said the couple that was sitting at the bar had paid for our food. The couple left without us knowing who they were and be able to thank them. Thank you.”

“Dear PoPville,
I fainted yesterday morning while riding the green line towards Gallery Place/Chinatown on the way to a doctor’s appointment. I was standing reading my book when I suddenly got very lightheaded and lost consciousness (possibly from motion sickness?). The next thing I know I woke up on the floor of the train with many people around trying to help me. I was probably only out for a few seconds. One person had already gotten on the call box to tell the train operator. Someone gave me their seat. Someone else picked up my book that had dropped. The whole situation was very disorienting; I’ve never fainted before. (more…)

A reader wishes to convey this public thank you to two riders on the Red Line Friday night:
“I really appreciated their kindness and looking out. Hope to run into them again sometime.”
“To the two ladies on the Redline train Friday night who were kind enough to chat with me when the older gentleman was too (uncomfortably) talkative, thank you. I really appreciate your approach and apologize for not being more responsive. Exhausted after a week of work travel but will not forget your kindness and will be sure to pay it forward.

Huge growth since we first posted about All In Service DC on December 29th – nice!
From a press release:
“Launched at the end of 2016, All In Service DC organizes over 50 Washington, DC service businesses to donate profits from inauguration weekend to local service organizations. The 50 plus businesses are as diverse as the city, such as new-to-town Momofuku CCDC and longstanding Cafe Saint-Ex. A furniture store, Miss Pixie’s Furnishings & whatnot, and Logan 14 Aveda Salon & Spa have joined too.
“We invite all of DC’s business to join this amazing effort to demonstrate commitment to community,” says Alaina Dyne, All In Service DC co-creator. “We’d love to see the entire DC service industry participate to show our commitment to hospitality and community, when we’re serving hundreds of thousands of visitors. This inauguration weekend, eat and drink in DC for good.”
All In Service DC’s goals are both to fundraise for local service organizations and also to provide an opportunity for service workers throughout the city to contribute to their community, while they are working the inauguration weekend. (more…)
