Since March 16, 2020, we have provided 15,000 nutritious meals to D.C’s most underserved populations. Starting today, Meals For The City will be powered by @WCKitchen and @ChefJoseAndres. They’ve created a model to transform restaurants into community kitchens to bring people back to work; they’ve served over 3 million meals to vulnerable communities and frontline workers across the country since this pandemic turned our lives upside down.⁣ Moving forward, we’ll serve 15,000 more and we will get through this together, one meal at time.”

“Dear PoPville,

I wanted to share an experience that has shown me there is still kindness in the world. I work for a large international non-profit and yesterday 70 people were laid off, 10% of employees. I am safe but know many of the employees, including my best friend, whom I’ve worked with for more than 7 years that were impacted. I was angry at the world and went for a run. After 4 miles I was overcome with emotion and stopped at the corner of 16th and S St NW to compose myself. As I was doubled over sobbing, a kind man stopped and walked over to me. (more…)

Ed. Note: You guys rule. I want to take the opportunity to thank all those who’ve been so supportive of me and so many others during these crazy days. I got this email yesterday from the DC Food Project “Regarding our Emergency Weekend Bag Program. Since your article was posted we have raised close to $11K, which will allow us to continue helping our school communities gain access to additional food, during these unknown times. We can’t thank you enough.”

“Dear PoPville,

Our household is set to get the full $2,400 from the stimulus, but we have secure jobs and the pandemic has only served to reduce our expenses. While we could always throw the money at our mortgage, we have decided that we want to spend our stimulus check in a way that maximizes its impact on the local economy and/or struggling DC residents. “Dear PoPville,

DC COVID Sitters is a medical student-run group that pairs undergraduate and graduate students with essential healthcare personnel (doctors, nurses, MAs, respiratory therapists, environmental services, etc.) who are in need of babysitting services, pet sitting, grocery runs, during this difficult time. Lots of folks have been asking how they can help out hospital workers – here’s a great, delicious way from Wiseguy’s GoFundMe:

“Wiseguy Pizza x Altani for Healthcare Workers

Making food is how we show our love, and we’ve fought this pandemic the best way we know how to–by helping to feed the people on the front lines. We were able to donate 101 18” pizzas (feeding 400+ people), 800 masks, and 7400 gloves in a single day to 6 area hospitals as well as other essential workers and those in need.

Then the calls started to roll into our store from people who wanted to help do the same. So we’re making a formal ask for you to contribute to helping us keep area healthcare workers fed and provided with a much-needed bit of cheer.

OUR PLAN (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I wanted to follow up and let you know that we were able to connect Arielle to her good samaritans. Both were honored this past weekend, along with the paramedics and Metro police who responded, with a Cardiac Arrest Save Coin. The coin is presented to anyone who helps return a pulse to someone who has suffered cardiac arrest and is later released from the hospital in good health. (more…)

Ed. Note: If you are one of the good samaritans please email me at [email protected] so I can put you in touch with OP thanks!

“Dear PoPville,

I’m reaching out to see if you can post to help find more information about two good samaritans who administered CPR and saved my friend’s life at the Columbia Heights metro station on Monday, 1/6.

My friend, a woman in her late 20s, was traveling home from work and collapsed inside the station at about 6:00pm after suffering sudden cardiac arrest. She has been recovering in the hospital since then, and is doing well now.

Last week, we were able to meet the paramedics who responded to the event and they told us that before they were able to get to the station, fellow commuters were the first to respond and immediately started administering CPR. After learning that, I also spoke to the station manager who was on duty that night, and to someone who I noticed had tweeted about the event. Both described the commuters who first responded as two women, and they think one or both of them may have been medical professionals, because someone had a stethoscope out. (more…)

Also awesome from Nanuka:

“Please help me thank a man who saw me finding shelter from pouring rain under a storefront in a long silk dress tonight & said: You look like you need an umbrella, then handed me his and continued his way without asking anything else. You are a hero!”

“Dear PoPville,

I’m the manager at Martha’s Table Outfitters.

Earlier this week, one of our team members came across an old monogrammed photo wallet in the pocket of a man’s suit jacket that was donated to us. We would love to reunite the item with its owner as it appears to be a lovely family keepsake.

The outside of the wallet is monogrammed with the initials R.L.P. and the inside has two wedding photos and a portrait photo of a woman. (more…)

April writes last night:

“To the gentleman in the dapper suit & top coat. Thank you -whenever you are- for watching over my bike as I ran into the fedex on 14th! You were so generous & made my night less of a cluster-f**k than it already was. Bless you! (@PoPville, maybe my Good Samaritan follows you?)”

And because Twitter can be awesome – Carly replies: “Are you in a Hallmark Christmas movie?”
