From the office of Councilmember Elissa Silverman:

“The D.C. Council unanimously passed emergency legislation introduced by Councilmember Elissa Silverman (I-At-Large) to extend unemployment compensation by seven additional weeks for all eligible claimants. Since the declaration of the coronavirus public health emergency, more than 150,000 District workers have filed for unemployment compensation. The emergency legislation approved today is especially urgent for the tens of thousands of contractors and gig workers receiving weekly benefits through the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA), by extending the program from 39 to 46 weeks. From an email:

Corduroy and Baby Wale have opened a pop up in the alley behind the restaurants called Clos Du Roy. A clos is a walled in vineyard and this is a walled in patio. A new mural wraps around the back of the buildings and gives it some life. We have fire pits and marshmallows are coming soon. The menu is more Corduroy than Baby Wale right now. Weather permitting Clos Du Roy will be open 7 nights a week until the cold comes.” (more…)

1432 Pennsylvania Ave, SE via Wisdom

Thanks to Joel for passing on from Wisdom:

“Friends, patrons, and gin heads-

it is with profound gratitude that I announce that Wisdom’s closing its doors after exactly 12 years of business.

In 2003, I developed a dream-that quickly became an obsession – of opening a neighborhood cocktail lounge. The cocktail resurgence was in its infancy and at the time there were very few resources to learn about the craft. That challenge was part of the appeal. I spent a lot of time and energy researching and experimenting with flavors and recipes. After years of military service, I found a city and neighborhood to plant my feet and finally take a leap of faith.

In October 2008, I opened Wisdom – DC’s first cocktail bar. It was an uphill battle on many fronts. I opened an upscale cocktail bar in an underdeveloped part of Pennsylvania Ave SE during a recession, with a culture that had little knowledge of cocktails, and in a city that I knew almost no one in. Some would call that foolish and others would call it brave; I suppose the truth is somewhere in the middle. Chasing this dream sparked passion and purpose, which stoked the fire of persistence. We always had to fight for our customers and could never take them for granted. That is probably what made the bar so special. (more…)

From a press release:

“The owners of Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken, Elliot Spaisman and Jeff Halpern, announce the opening of Satellite Sandwiches, an all-day sandwich and cookie-centric ghost kitchen. The menu, composed of a variety of Philadelphia-inspired cheesesteaks, comforting sandwiches and sides, plus jumbo made-to-order cookies, is exclusively available for delivery or pre-ordered pick-up at Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken at 1308 G Street NW. Orders can be placed online, starting at 8:00 a.m. on Monday, October 19th, 2020.

The menu, available here, developed by Chef Chris Kujala from Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken, features a selection of classic cheesesteaks including the traditional Philly Classic, a Pizza Steak topped with marinara sauce and fried mushrooms, and a Cheese Steak Hoagie served with lettuce, tomato, mayo, and a pickle. All cheesesteaks are served on a toasted garlic-butter sub roll from Baguette Republic and, depending on customer preference, can be topped with either a smoked gouda cheese sauce or melted provolone. Customers additionally have the option to build their own cheesesteaks from a wide list of creative toppings.

Other sandwich options include Chicken Parmesan, a grilled lamb Gyro, and Portobello Mushroom “Asteroid,” a vegan-friendly version of Astro’s popular hot chicken offering. Wings, spiced-rubbed steak fries, and a hearty chicken noodle soup round out the all-day menu. For a sweet ending, Satellite Sandwiches offers 6.5 oz. made-to-order cookies in four flavors: Double Chocolate Chip, Dark Chocolate Salted Caramel, Cake Batter Funfetti, and Pumpkin Snickerdoodle.

Thanks to all who passed on from Republic Kolache:

“Some bittersweet news today folks: after 5 very gratifying years, Republic Kolache will be closing up shop early next month.

From the first popups at American Ice in Aug 2015, to a wholesale business that placed kolaches on the shelves of Whole Foods & many local coffee shops, to the opening of our sister brick & mortar Republic Cantina — we’ve truly had a good run.

The rationale here is what you’d probably guess: the pandemic has caused a massive drop in our sales (namely on the wholesale side, which represented ~90% of our production). With many of our cafe & grocery customers closed, continuing operations is unfortunately just no longer sustainable. (more…)

1921 8th Street, NW via Lettie Gooch

From Lettie Gooch:

“15 years ago this month we signed a lease to open our very first women’s clothing boutique on 9th ST in Shaw.  We are honored to be able to celebrate this milestone and be part of local retail in DC’s vibrant U ST/SHAW corridor.  It’s also been 5 years since we opened our current location, and like many businesses in our community, neighbors and friends, we are adapting.

These are extraordinary times, and we could have never imagined what this year would bring.  Our lease is ending this month. Given the current climate, we have decided now is the time to SHIFT. Through the month of October, you can support us by: (more…)
