“Dear PoPville,

I was in line [Wednesday], November 18, to get a COVID test at Judiciary Square from about 9-11am (in the FRIGID cold) and a guy caught my eye standing a few places in line behind me. Although he had a mask on and was bundled up, I picked up on his general demeanor and gathered that he was a genuinely good person. Unfortunately, given the circumstances (trying to stay warm/alive, 30-foot distance between us, etc) I wasn’t able to break the ice with him – pun intended. I’m hoping I can make contact with him and see how accurate my Good Guy radar is. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I have started seeing a few of these outdoor dining bubbles pop up around town and am wondering what people’s thoughts are on this. While I am all for restaurants doing what they can to extend dining options and stay afloat during the pandemic, this seems like it’s bringing indoor dining ( and all of its pitfalls) outside. In theory these bubbles would be great if the party at the table is an immediate household, but that’s more the exception than the rule as far as what I am seeing people do here in DC. (more…)

From the Kennedy Center:

“The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts announces today that it will cancel all previously scheduled programs through April 25, 2021, due to the ongoing impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, Washington National Opera’s spring productions and much of the late spring and early summer touring theater programs have been canceled. During this period, the Center will offer an extremely limited number (20 or fewer) of in-person performances, as conditions allow, and expand its online offerings with a new platform called Digital Stage+–a free benefit for donors, members, and subscribers–while continuing to develop robust arts education content for students across the country. These most recent cancelations in 2021 represent 384 ticketed events and a financial loss of $24.1 million for the institution, plus an additional $7 to $8 million of revenue from programs that had not yet been announced. Combined with the fall cancelations in excess of $50 million, the total earned revenue loss for FY21 now stands at over $80 million. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

As the holiday season is quickly approaching and, unfortunately, COVID-19 cases are once again surging, I was wondering how I could support our amazing local healthcare workers and first responders during such a difficult time. Back in March and April there were various GoFundMes or restaurant partnerships to help donate meals to hospital divisions, etc – is there anything like that going on now? A lot of the links I found through researching had expired. Advice on how we can help make the next two months easier on them would be greatly appreciated.”

Thanks to all who passed on the GoFundMe for Sakina Halal Grill:

Kazi Manan introduced a new model of empathy and kindness in America when he opened his restaurant to every person who needs a refuge from their daily hunger. He has never differentiated between a paying or non-paying customer as he is constantly aware of his journey to success – and the difficulties along the way. Sakina Halal Grill has proudly served meals to the homeless independently and unsupported by any donations from patrons. He has always refused the offers as Sakina Halal Grill has been able to sustain this mission with its own funds and the prayers of the community. (more…)
