“As restaurants close again this week and restaurant workers are faced with being furloughed, Hook Hall Helps, the hospitality industry workers relief program started in March for the first pandemic shutdown, is being revived. Free meals and supply kits will be distributed every Monday from 3 until 5 pm at Hook Hall, 3400 Georgia Avenue NW. This week there will also be a Christmas Eve distribution from 3 until 5. Mayor’s Order Extends Public Health Emergency through March 31, 2021 – Indoor dining at restaurants suspended from December 23 (10pm) until January 15 (5am)

“Mayor Muriel Bowser issued Mayor’s Order 2020-127 to pause various activities in the District from 10:00 p.m., on Wednesday, December 23, 2020 until Friday, January 15, 2021, at 5:00 a.m. Additionally, the Order extends the state of emergency and public health emergency for Washington, DC through March 31, 2021.

Even for those activities that are not paused by Order, the Mayor strongly encourages residents to be cautious this holiday season so as to limit the spread of COVID-19.”

“This evening, after DC Public Schools and the Washington Teachers’ Union reached an agreement on a return to in-person learning, Mayor Bowser released the following statement:

“Since the summer, we have worked tirelessly to create a plan that allows for the safe return of in-person learning — a plan that meets the needs of students, educators, and families. While CARE classrooms have been limited, we know that for many families they have provided a critical lifeline. Still, we know that the best option for our young people is in-person learning, and that has remained our focus. The road ahead is long, and there is much learning loss to be made up for, but this agreement brings us another step closer to getting our students where they need to be – in the classroom, surrounded by educators and friends, feeling challenged and loved.”

“Temporary Closure Beginning December 18, 2020

Consistent with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance and in coordination with the NPS Office of Public Health, the Washington Monument is temporarily closed due to a reduction in its workforce resulting from a potential COVID-19 exposure. NPS is working to staff the Washington Monument at the appropriate levels to maintain the safety of its operations for visitors and employees.”

“Metrobus riders return to boarding through front door, paying fares on Sunday, January 3”

“Metrobus will resume fare collection and front-door boarding beginning Sunday, January 3, as part of Metro’s pandemic recovery plan that aims to preserve service and transit jobs.

The current rear-door boarding policy was implemented in March under Metro’s comprehensive plan to protect frontline employees at a time when less was known about the coronavirus and its means of transmission. Because the farebox and SmarTrip equipment is located at the front of the bus, the Metro Board authorized the temporary suspension of fare collection.

“With everyone wearing masks, shields for operators on every bus, and enhanced daily cleanings, front-door boarding is safe, expands our capacity for more riders, and helps us resume some normalcy,” said Metro General Manager/CEO Paul J. Wiedefeld. “We also need to collect fares from every rider to keep essential Metro transit employees working and continue to provide essential service.”

Beginning January 3, customers should board at the front of the bus. The cost per trip is $2 payable in cash or with SmarTrip. (more…)
