“Have you checked out Midnight Deli yet at 4701 Georgia Ave NW? It’s looks like a regular little convenience store, but I noticed a smoker outside a couple weeks ago when I was walking to Buna after your coverage. I went by Midnight Deli yesterday afternoon to see what was going on and they had some really good bbq going on – I got an order of 4 bourbon wings and 4 smoked maple wings. The bbq is available Weds – Sun, but they have other items on Mon and Tues. They also sell 6 packs of beer and a few other random stuff. I spoke with the guys running it a bit and they said they opened in January. (more…)

Back in February we learned:

“José Andrés’ ThinkFoodGroup is proud to announce that this Summer, America Eats Tavern will return to Washington, D.C., offering guests the opportunity to experience an inventive take on some of the country’s most iconic and historic dishes and drinks, with a spotlight on local and regional flavors. Taking up residence in the former Old Glory Bar-B-Que space, America Eats Tavern will be located in the heart of the historic Georgetown neighborhood at 3139 M Street NW.

In addition to the American classics that guests know and love, Andrés will be introducing barbeque to the restaurant’s menu to add to the culinary experience, as well as a more casual ambiance. Andrés and his culinary team have conducted extensive research to identify the best products available, highlighting local meats, seafood, wines, cheeses, beers and other products from the mid-Atlantic region.”

“Looks like DCity Smokehouse is doing a major overhaul of their outdoor seating area. Installing previous paving, minor landscaping, and tree planting. Per the Bartender, it won’t be open for a while, “probably for next spring”.

Based on the tree protection, E&S controls, and Miss Utility markings dated 8/28, it looks like they will break ground any day.

There is a plan hanging on the wall inside. Too bad we have to wait but should be worth it!”

Thanks to all who messaged about Jenkins BBQ soft opening in the former Ruby Tuesday space in Columbia Heights. So far the very early word is excellent!

Sean reports:

“So far at Jenkins Capital BBQ: Smoky, meaty wings, crispy tater tots. Waiting on my pulled pork sammi w/slaw of course.

Pork showed up. Nice bark!”

Ricky reports:

“Walked past Jenkins BBQ in CoHi this evening and was surprised to see it finally opened! Since we were already looking for a place to have dinner we decided to try it out. I enjoyed my pull pork platter with Mac and cheese and tots. Also didn’t hurt that everyone gets 15% off their meal tonight and tomorrow, 10% off Sunday, and 5% off Monday. According to the restaurant, they are hosting their grand opening Tuesday, July 4.”

2nd and Florida Ave, NW

From a press release:

“Co-owners Scott Jacobs, Melvin Hines and the Southeast Restaurant Group (SERG) are fired up and ready to announce January 4th as opening of the all new DCity Smokehouse location.

Located at 203 Florida Ave NW, the popular eatery will once again offer the best in barbecue, but at in even greater capacity than before. While the last location (8 Florida Ave NW, which closed in December 2015) was mostly a carry-out spot with just a few counter seats, the new restaurant boasts a full bar and seating for 35 inside. Better yet, the seating will more than double when spring comes as the patio opens with seating for 45.

What to expect?

Restaurant-goers will be happy to find the same menu items that first made DCity Smokehouse such a hit when it originally opened in 2013. The menu will include staple sandwiches such as the Meaty Palmer (turkey, pork belly, avocado, tomato, chipotle aioli at $10), the Brisket Champ (sliced smoked brisket, pickles, crispy onions, house bbq sauce at $10), the DCity Halfsmoke (half smoke sausage, brisket chill, nacho cheese, yellow mustard) and more, see the full menu below. The menu will also see the return of platters but this time, around instead of the option of just one side, platters now come with two or more sides. Some standouts include the Showstopper (rib tips, brisket, smoked wings, and three sides at $30), and the Ribs and Wings Combo (spare ribs, pit smoked wings and two sides at $15). Meat will be smoked daily in two J & R smokers, one using hickory and cherry wood to smoke the pork and poultry and the other will handle the ribs, brisket and pork with the help of mild white and red oak woods.

What’s new?

While DCity will mostly focus on it’s tried and true staples, the menu will also see a couple additions like the Mac and Jack Cheese ($3/$6). As one of the biggest selling points, DCity is going above and beyond the call of a standard smokehouse with in-house baking. The bread, a cross between a milk bun and a yeast roll, will serve as the perfect complement to the meats.

Continues with full menu after the jump. (more…)
