“excited to share that both AKO by KENAKI and State Fair are opening this week at The Roost.

First, State Fair – the frozen custard and sundae shop from Buzz Bakeshop pastry chef Allie Cheppa – is open tomorrow after a soft opening this past weekend. Menu is pasted at the bottom of this email. We’re also offering a free custard cup for kids with the purchase of a sundae to celebrate opening weekend (available this Fri-Sun). State Fair is open Thursdays – Saturdays from 4 to 8 PM and Sundays from 12 to 4 PM.

Then on Friday, AKO by KENAKI will open. Chef Ken Ballogdajan and his sister Aki will focus on sushi and raw fish preparations for their counter at The Roost. The hours will be Wed-Fri from 4 to 10 PM; Saturdays from noon to 10 PM; and Sundays from noon to 8 PM.

As is the case with the other stalls, guests can order from all available menus via QR code on their phones while seated (inside or out) or for carryout.”

“Slice Joint is a joint venture between Neighborhood Restaurant Group (The Roost 1401 Pennsylvania Ave, SE) and Rachael Marie, formerly of Roberta’s. The first Slice Joint location opened at The Market Line food hall on the Lower East Side in November 2019 (the same food hall where NRG’s craft beer bar The Grand Delancey sits). Slice Joint’s menu features a tight selection of approachable, New York and Grandma-style pizzas (whole & by-the-slice) that rely on only fresh, seasonal and high-quality ingredients – including Rachae’s house cheese blend. Slice Joint’s DC location will mirror the current offerings, with some seasonal updates. Read More

From an email:

“Brother-and-sister owners Ken and Aki Ballogdajan will open their new concept AKO by KENAKI at The Roost early 2020. Chef Ken and his sister Aki opened their first restaurant, KENAKI Sushi Counter, in Gaithersburg last year. While Ken touts a 25-year career in the industry (which includes time spent at Raku, VOLT, and with Chef Ryan Trevino in San Juan, PR), his sister Aki left her career in software in 2018 to open KENAKI as its GM. Though this will be the second concept for the Ballogdajans, the siblings are third-generation restaurant owners and got their start in the industry as teens. Their sushi counter at The Roost is named for their late mother, Ako (her nickname). Read More

From the Neighborhood Restaurant Group:

“I wanted to let you know we’ve partnered with Matt Adler to develop the 65-seat stand-alone restaurant that will open adjacent to The Roost. Caruso’s Grocery will be modeled after the classic, Italian-American “red sauce” joint; it’s very important to Matt and us as a team to not reinvent the wheel with this concept, but instead to focus on making the best possible versions of classic Italian-American dishes.
