From WMATA:
“Facing an unprecedented $750 million budget shortfall in the coming year, Metro is asking the public to provide feedback on the proposed Fiscal Year 2025 (FY25) Budget which includes drastic service cuts, fare increases, layoffs, and other severe cost cutting measures.
The $4.5 billion capital and operating budget proposal provides a worst-case scenario; however, Metro’s funding partners are currently working through legislation that may reduce some of the most detrimental fare and service changes proposed.
The public is encouraged to review the proposed FY25 budget and provide comments through our online survey tool, or by attending an in-person or virtual public hearing. All comments should be submitted no later than Tuesday, March 5, at 5 p.m.
The budget shortfall is the result of several factors, including the end of federal pandemic relief funds, historic inflation pushing costs up, and slower than expected ridership recovery. Metro has taken steps to close the funding gap by reducing administrative costs, using capital funds to cover operating maintenance expenses, and decreasing fare evasion.
These steps alone are not enough. Metro is legally required to present a balanced budget each year, and the FY25 budget proposals reflect the significant cuts that would be needed if our local, state, and federal partners are unable to supply the necessary funding.
Metro has released a revised FY25 proposed Budget based on public funding commitments that keeps operating spending flat with Fiscal Year 2024 and minimizes service changes. Pending this funding, the FY25 Budget proposal would severely limit service and increase costs for customers. These include: (more…)

“Single tracking to impact Blue, Orange, and Silver lines
This weekend, Saturday, Feb. 10 and Sunday, Feb. 11, Metro’s Red Line will be closed between Takoma and Rhode Island Ave stations, with no Red Line service at Fort Totten and Brookland. Free shuttle buses will replace trains and the upper-level Green Line platform will remain open at Fort Totten providing an alternative for some customers traveling into downtown DC.
During the weekend, Metro will install radio and fiber-optic cables to upgrade communications systems and support future technology improvements. Crews will also perform additional signaling, track and system maintenance between the Red Line stations.
On the Blue, Orange, and Silver lines, service will be adjusted to accommodate single tracking between McPherson Sq and Smithsonian stations. Workers will replace rail and fasteners, weld together sections of rail to eliminate joints for a safer, smoother ride, along with other mechanical and system maintenance. (more…)

From an email:
“The electric vehicle making the biggest impact on people’s mobility and the environment is the electric bike. The world’s 280 million electric bikes (compared to just 20 million electric cars) are cutting global oil demand by about one million barrels a day — four times more than electric cars are displacing. As smaller, lighter vehicles than cars, the production of electric bikes also consumes far fewer resources and produces much less carbon. The lithium needed for one electric Hummer can power 400 electric bikes!
While the Biden Administration and automakers are now pushing towards electric cars, DC is leapfrogging their efforts by offering electric bike rebates to citizens, building out the proper infrastructure, and creating an environment where people don’t need to spend >$10,000 a year on a car (or 2nd car).
This is where King Electric comes into play, who just opened their new Experience Center in Foggy Bottom at 502 23RD ST NW. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,
Not sure if they started on 1/1 but have gotten $200 in speeding tickets so far in 2024 from the Kenliworth exit off of 295 South.
Wanted to warn D.C. drivers that the 25 mph speed limit is being enforced even if it feels like an offramp from the highway where you’d gradually decelerate from 45-50. (more…)
