“Dear PoPville,

The neighbors in central Shaw could use your help seeking advice from the community on how to deal with a dangerous intersection in our neighborhood:

There was another accident at the one-way stop at 8th and Q NW on Monday–this time, an SUV ended up on the sidewalk and mangled a treebox and another vehicle. Both drivers were thankfully OK. An SUV traveling south on 8th (turning left onto Q) hit a Prius traveling east on Q. (8th St. traffic has a stop sign; Q St. traffic does not.) The driver of the SUV said she did not realize cross traffic doesn’t have a stop sign, so she entered the intersection expecting the Prius to stop.

This intersection has long been a hazard, with accidents and daily near-misses between vehicles, bicycles, scooters, and pedestrians. Residents have made multiple appeals to the city to install a stop sign on Q St. to improve the safety of the intersection. In March, at the request of the local neighborhood association, Councilmember Allen wrote a letter to Director Marootian requesting conversion of this intersection to an all-way stop, but we have yet to receive a reply from DDOT regarding this. We also brought this to the attention of the Mayor’s Office of Community Relations & Service, during two walk-through visits and multiple emails over the past few years, also to no avail. Vision Zero? More like Zero Vision.

A few additional factors make this one-way stop particularly hazardous: (more…)

From WMATA:

“Metro is encouraging customers to participate in the 2018 Bus Passenger Survey, which begins today. Because Metro’s funding from local jurisdiction is based in part on jurisdiction of residence, the survey is used to determine how transit funding is allocated based among the cities and counties that Metro services. The survey also provides data on ridership and travel characteristics to help support Metro’s planning efforts and collects general demographic information as required by federal regulations.

Over the next four months, surveys will be distributed and collected aboard buses by trained research contractors throughout the Metrobus service area. (more…)

“@kenyanmcduffie Are we going to wait until a child walking to school at 8:30 in the morning is killed at the intersection of Taylor St NE/13th Place before making 13th Pl one ways or at least a 4-way stop? @PoPville Too many accidents/way too many near misses on daily basis!”

My PSA from almost exactly a year ago has failed miserably.

This dockable bikeshare bike was chilling on a random side street in Forest Hills. So what happens. The last person to ride it checks their bill at the end of the month and are like WTF? Does it keep racking up charges until someone is kind enough to dock it for them? So many questions.

Holy smokes – this insanity was tweeted by DC Fire and EMS Saturday around 2pm:

“This was the scene this morning at Rock Creek Parkway and P St NW after a vehicle went into the creek. #DCsBravest searched the vehicle and adjacent area and found no victims.”

The following was written by PoPville contributor David McAuley, founder of Short Articles about Long Meetings.

detail from documents DDOT handed out at the meeting

Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC) 1D/Mount Pleasant voted to endorse a plan to repave and restripe a section of Park Road NW, from the bridge over Piney Branch Road in Rock Creek Park to just past the intersection with Walbridge Place. The plan, as presented at the September 25 ANC meeting by a representative of the District Department of Transportation (DDOT), would eliminate several on-street parking spaces in the neighborhood, which brought some local residents to the meeting to object.

The ANC’s resolution to urge DDOT to proceed with the plan includes a suggestion to refrain from putting a “Stop” sign and a “No parking” sign at the corner of Park Road and Pierce Mill Road, which would create a new 40-foot long area (about 2-3 car lengths) where parking would be unambiguously not allowed. Apparently, parking occurs there now, but Emily Dalphy, DDOT Transportation Engineer, said that parking in this area might already be “technically illegal”. (more…)

Thanks to Nicollette for sending yesterday:

“Still looking to find out the reasoning behind this bright yellow metro car that I saw this morning at L’enfant.”

Will tweet metro but anyone happen to know? Caption contest while we’re waiting to find out!

Update
: It’s the money train – that was fast! Though I think they should use a more subtle color to move money around…
