“Dear PoPville,

Sometime during the week of March 3, 2019, the District Government installed a traffic island (or maybe it’s a Pedestrian island, not sure which is correct) at the intersection of Georgia Avenue and Morton Street, Northwest.

No doubt this island is needed as new nearby businesses attract local residents to Georgia Avenue in numbers that significantly increase interactions between pedestrians and drivers. I don’t have any information on any incidents at this intersection or any others nearby, however, I have seen a number of instances when pedestrians attempting to cross Georgia Avenue in my neighborhood have almost been killed or severely injured by drivers that do not yield to pedestrians attempting to cross. Liz reported yesterday:

“I guess wmata has really stepped up enforcement. Husband put $40 on his SmarTrip card this morning. Card reader on bus just now showed $0.55 on card. Driver let him on bus, but called metro police. $50 ticket later, husband is walking home. WTF? (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I had a recent Lyft experience where the driver was texting while driving. I politely asked the driver to stop, but he started texting again a few minutes later (while coming to a stop at a red light during rush hour traffic in Georgetown). During 2 previous situations similar to this, I have contacted Lyft and they have refunded my ride or given me a credit for the next ride. This time, however, they have told me they are unable to so and that they wouldn’t want to “monetize my safety”. (more…)

Oof, thanks to Jimmy for sending.

From WMATA earlier: “UPDATED: Red Line Delay: No longer single tracking. Residual delays continue in both directions due to an earlier police investigation at Rhode Island Ave.”

“Dear PoPville,

I know you’ve posted about stuff like this before, but I was hoping you might want to post again. I’m pregnant and a biker almost hit me in the crosswalk this morning crossing 18th street at G st. He was going full speed toward a red light. I cursed him out but I know the woman who was killed by a biker a couple years ago and I feel like it’s time for a reminder that bikes need to follow the rules of the road.”

Ed. Note: I’d just add, as I mentioned in yesterday’s rant/revel, it’s time for everyone to follow the rules of the road, regardless of your preferred mode of transport. (more…)

From the Mayor’s Office:

“Today, while celebrating three years of the DC Streetcar, Mayor Bowser extended free rides on the DC Circulator through March 31, announced a new partnership to give free annual Capital Bikeshare memberships to District veterans, and called on the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) to restore full rail service.

“When we increase access to safe, reliable, and affordable transportation options, we give more Washingtonians a fair shot,” said Mayor Bowser. “While the District is doing a fantastic job providing residents and visitors with a range of ways to move around our city, we know we can’t do it alone: we need Metro working at full capacity. We need a world-class Metro system that meets the needs of a world-class city.”

The free Capital Bikeshare memberships for District veterans are made possible through a partnership between Capital Bikeshare’s Community Partner Program and the Mayor’s Office on Veteran’s Affairs (MOVA). (more…)
