redacted also reports:
“H1 bus seemingly broken down in the middle of turning from Columbia onto Connecticut. My 42 was tipped off by a delivery driver so we made a very tight detour down a side street and managed to avoid it. None of the other buses were so lucky”

“Dear PoPville,
This week, I was turning the corner onto our street/ house after a lovely evening (7 pm) walk with the dog. As with many dogs, though she is very friendly and well-trained, she’s terrified of skateboards and dockless scooters when they’re in motion and making noise. Knowing this, as I saw a young man on a scooter approaching us quickly, headphones in (corded for context), I held my dog by the collar and moved her as far to the edge of the sidewalk as I could.
With the other hand, I waved frantically to him. I finally got his attention and politely asked him to wait for us to round the corner to our house rather than zooming past us, because my dog (pointing to the cute, but growingly anxious, 60-lbs rescue shepherd mix I was physically restraining) doesn’t do well around scooters. If he could wait 20 seconds for us to get out of his pathway that would be great.
He told me to f*&k off and that if my dog had a problem with him scooting on the sidewalk, it should be put down, it’s not his problem and proceeded to zoom right by us. (more…)

A reader reports around 1:30pm:
“just left Gallery Place station – something on fire on the tracks, smoke everywhere
It was a classic scene – smoke filling the station, employee on platform yelling into a walkie talkie, guy on train says “oh no, i am not dying today” and runs off train, train conductor telling people to get on board then booking it out of the station.”
From ALERT DC:
“DC Fire reports the Gallery Place / Chinatown Metro station is closed due to fire activity. Metro shuttle buses are in service.”
Update 2:39pm:
“Metro reports the fire activity is clear from the Gallery Place / Chinatown Metro Station and normal service has been restored.”

Thanks to Jeffrey for sending this entry:
“guess the md drivers have trouble parking, too (U Street)”
Update from MPD:
“At approximately 4am this morning, MPD units responded to the 1200 block of U Street NW for the report of a motor vehicle accident. A Nissan traveling eastbound on U Street struck a Toyota that was parked in the curb lane on the south side of the street, causing the Toyota to mount the curb. The driver of the Nissan was stopped and determined to be operating under the influence, and was placed under arrest. There were no injuries reported as a result of this collision.”

“Dear PoPville,
I saw the next bus post and it came to mind this morning on my commute to work. There’s a great app called Transit that I don’t think has been mentioned on your site. It’s main feature is the ability to plan a commute and see all the possible options available to you, from scooters and bikes to buses, trains, and ubers. (more…)

From WMATA:
“This weekend, Feb. 9-10, Metro will work around the clock to install new, brighter lighting at Farragut North and the Red Line platforms of Metro Center and Gallery Place stations. Due to the location of the lights in the middle of the tracks, trains cannot operate on either track while the work is taking place. As a result, buses will replace trains between Dupont Circle and Judiciary Square throughout the weekend. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,
The last several weeks the next bus arrival website (and apps using Metro’s data) have been WAY off.
1. Bus location and arrival data routinely doesn’t show up–it’s like every other bus is a ghost, totally invisible.
2. When bus arrival data shows up, it bounces around substantially. For example, I checked the website app at 8:10 a.m. and saw the bus was supposed to show up in 15 minutes (8:25 a.m.). When I checked again at 8:15 a.m., the bus was 2 minutes away, arriving at 8:17 a.m. That’s nuts. The ETAs are insanely inaccurate when they are listed.
Fellow bus riders have noticed the same problem (we’ve had plenty of time to compare/vent while waiting for buses). Has anyone else noticed this? What might have caused this (it used to be SO accurate!)? How can we get it fixed?”

Maryland plate? Yes, yes it is.
