From WMATA:

“ATU Local 689, the union representing Metrobus Operators, is currently engaged in an unauthorized and potentially unlawful labor action that is significantly impacting riders on the X2 line. The stated goal by union leadership is to draw attention to safety concerns, specifically bus operator assaults, following an incident on Saturday. This is a subject on which Metro and the union agree: Absolutely no one should be assaulted simply for doing their job. However, we disagree with impacting Metro customers who are simply trying to get to work and school by Metrobus Operators refusing to provide bus service in a disruptive and unlawful job action.

Metro and the union also agree that laws need to be strengthened to help protect bus operators, including enhanced penalties for anyone who assaults a frontline transit worker. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

Without fail, the H3 turns right from Columbia Road onto Harvard. Every time it does this, it barely makes it! It either clips the curb (shocking pedestrians who are waiting for the light) or if it forces traffic heading south on Harvard to back up. It’s so illogical! I’m attaching a few pics. Is there anything we can do about this?! Why does WMATA not see that this is simply dangerous & inefficient?”

Martha reports Sunday just after 2pm:

“Insane crash on western ave just off the circle – the telephone pole is cracked in two spots and being held up by a small crane. Tons of pepco trucks.”

At 9:19 this morning Alert DC reports:

“DDOT reports Western Ave at Chevy Chase Circle, NW is clear. All lanes are open.”

Allyson reports:

“Anyone know what happened? Taxi flipped at 14th and L NW around 11:30pm on Sunday. I was driving by and police hadn’t shown up yet. Seems the driver was still in the car. Hoping everyone is okay!! People were surrounding it trying to help.”

From DDOT:

“The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will kick off a series of public events on the design phase of the 16th Street NW Bus Lanes Project. As part of the events, DDOT will provide a project overview, present roadway layouts, and gather feedback.

The 16th Street NW Bus Lanes Project is an effort to improve bus service and reliability in the 16th Street NW corridor. The corridor was identified as a transit priority in moveDC, the District’s multimodal transportation plan. In April 2016, DDOT released the 16th Street NW Transit Priority Planning Study, which proposed a set of recommendations to advance to the design phase. The recommendations included peak-hour, peak-direction bus lanes; bus service changes; bus stop improvements; and transit priority infrastructure. The project’s design phase will use recommendations from the 16th Street NW Transit Priority Planning Study to begin environmental documentation, and to develop preliminary engineering designs.

There are three opportunities to provide input on this phase of the project. All events will cover the same material and seek public feedback. (more…)

From the Mayor’s Office:

“Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser announced funding for the much-anticipated MetroExtra Limited Stop bus route on the 14th Street corridor.

“As the District continues to grow, so must our public transportation options,” said Mayor Bowser. “Moreover, our Administration is committed to inclusive prosperity so that residents in every corner of the District benefit from our growth. The new Route 59 is part of our ongoing efforts to enhance service and give residents more options to get to work, school and beyond.”

The new 59 route will serve the area between the Takoma Metrorail station and the Federal Triangle Metrorail station. The limited-stop bus service will operate in addition to the existing 52, 53, and 54 bus services. The route will initially operate every 15 minutes during weekday rush hours. The estimated operating cost is approximately $1.2 million annually. If approved in the budget, the funds will be in place in October 2017, allowing the 59 to begin service when the next Metrobus service adjustments occur in December 2017. (more…)

g9-route

A reader reports:

“Just wanted to share with you and fellow readers, from Kenyon McDuffie’s facebook page last night.

“The G9 is on schedule to begin service on Rhode Island Avenue in March 2017.

The G9 will run the entire east-west length of Ward 5 along Rhode Island Avenue and connect downtown on the same route the G8 takes.”

It looks like the new G9 route got approved and will start running in March 2017. Not sure of the exact route/stops, but this is great news for ward 5 residents as it will connect Rhode Island Ave to downtown via a direct bus route. Awesome for Woodridge/Langdon/Brookland residents!”

“Dear PoPville,

An incident happened this morning around 7:30am while attempting to board a 70 bus. Below is the message I submitted to WMATA. I certainly understand that bus drivers have a schedule to keep and they need passengers to keep moving, but the reaction today seemed cruel when it meant leaving a family by the side of the road. On the other hand, it was rush hour, people have places to be, and being a bus driver is often a challenging/thankless job. What do others think? Should I have confronted the driver, or was he just doing his job?

“This morning WMATA employee, “Mr. B”, pulled over at the intersection of Farragut & Georgia Ave NW. Myself and a family of 5 were waiting. It took the family approximately 15 seconds to collect themselves (gather strollers, etc.). I was waiting to let them get on the bus when Mr. B shut the door in their faces. I ran up and knocked on the door and the bus did not stop.

I subsequently ran and chased the bus down at the next stop. I verbally confronted Mr. B who said “I stopped and no one moved”. This is false. We were all moving towards the doors, but it took the family a brief amount of time to collect their things. It was clear to everyone, including a crossing guard at the intersection (who also yelled at the bus as it drove by), that we wanted to get on. If nothing else, the driver should have realized this fact when I knocked loudly as he was about to pull away. (more…)
