Ed. Note: Before the automatons reflexively accuse of me of supporting such actions by merely asking the question, let me be crystal clear and say that I love neighborhood fireworks displays. I’ve loved them from the first time I properly encountered them in 2003. I momentarily loved them less when I had an infant sleeping but I still respected them. I also understand that not all people feel the same way.

This has been a July 5th post for as long as I can remember. Some folks love the neighborhood fireworks displays, and some folks (usually with little kids and/or pets) despise them. And of course some folks don’t really care one way or the other. But this year, I’ve seen a bunch of messages about traditional neighborhood displays being busted up in Petworth and Columbia Heights. In Columbia Heights one reader says that the Cardozo parking lot was emptied early by police and overseen by an ANC rep. “Was definitely a disheartening sight last night – the one day a year where everyone celebrates in community together….pretty sure ANCs have more important things to do then kill Independence Day fun. Thoughts?”

Did others also notice local neighborhood spots busted this year? If so, what neighborhood?

“Dear PoPville,

Our next door neighbor’s entire backyard is a giant farm/garden. From what we gather, this is something they’ve been doing for a long, long time. In theory, we find this really impressive. I love urban farming!

However, in practice, it is less awesome. They keep a giant, open storage container/tub of water in the backyard. (more…)

And not all were happy about it, got a lot of queries about this on twitter last night too. Ed. Note: Helluva game though – GO CAPS!!!

“Dear PoPville,

Last night, local NBC 4 covered the Caps game via helicopter. It was hovering non stop between 7:30 pm and 8:40 pm. Presumably, it left to refuel and was back hovering at 9:30 until 11:20 pm. I called NBC 4 and was told that they had an exclusive permit to fly until 11:30 pm to get footage of the crowds outside of the Capital One arena. The woman I spoke with said they were getting other callers complaining about their helicopter noise.

I am in Logan Circle, far enough away from the arena and even with ear plugs and closed doors and windows, the constant noise was driving me mad. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

We recently moved to Hill East and while it’s a generally great area, there is one issue we are wrestling with. Hopkins Public Housing essentially hosts outdoor concerts every Sunday morning with various singers. Following this they hook up the ipod and play music till 8 PM. The music is very loud, and we can clearly hear it inside our brick home. The music can be heard for blocks. On Memorial day, they sang and played music all day after they had their ‘concert’ on Sunday. We’re not objecting to playing music, we just don’t want to hear it in our homes.

Despite numerous neighbors’ efforts to contact 311, the police, council members, and asking them to turn down their music, it never stops. No one seems to care about our complaints. We honestly don’t know what to do at this point. Allowable residential noise levels are 60 decibels which is equivalent to normal conversation, and they are obviously disturbing the peace. (See pdf link on bylaws here.)

Thoughts on next steps?”

Ed. Note: To preempt the comments real quick- Say what you gotta say, but please try to say it nicely. Advice, however arguably warranted, will likely not be received well if delivered only with vitriol/derision.

“Dear PoPville,

We recently moved into a house with a yard and have quickly realized we have a pretty big sand fly/”No See Ums” problem.

I was outside talking to the neighbor for about 20 minutes, when I looked down and saw that my leg was covered in tiny, dark black, mosquito like flies. The next day I had over 50 red bites on each leg. Obviously it prevents us from enjoying the yard, and I noticed our dog was covered in them when we came in from doing his business too.

We don’t have any standing water, and neither do our neighbors. Any suggestions for getting rid of them? Particularly looking for a dog-friendly solution.”
