From the National Cathedral (3101 Wisconsin Avenue, NW):

“Washington National Cathedral will host an interfaith prayer vigil on Friday, March 23, for activists, students and pilgrims who are attending Saturday’s March For Our Lives to demand that their lives and safety become a priority for Congressional leaders in order to end gun violence and mass shootings in our schools.

Students and leaders from many faith traditions will lead this prayer service recognizing the breadth of trauma caused by gun violence, including community shootings, gang violence, school massacres, and suicide. In prayer and song, this gathering will honor those lost, acknowledge the pain survivors and victims’ families carry, and lift up the need for healing for communities impacted by gun violence and our country. Families, including that of Carmen Schentrup, a victim of the school shooting in Parkland, Florida, will be a part of the program of prayer and reflection.

“The Endless Cycle” by Tim Tate. “For every man shown here, 1000 people died last year because of gun violence. For every gun shown here, a child dies every day. A hard lesson we have to learn from Orlando…and Parkland… and…..Only by joining together can we hope to curtail gun violence!”

From Lyft:

“On March 24, those around the country will join March for Our Lives demonstrations to demand that their lives and safety become a priority. This movement has been led by student organizers from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, which less than a month and a half ago was the site of one of the nation’s deadliest school massacres.

Earlier this month, Lyft Co-Founders John Zimmer and Logan Green shared their support for the civic engagement these students have inspired by offering free Lyft rides to marches around the country.

“Your bravery and intelligence have provided a renewed and much needed hope for our future. We are incredibly grateful for the example you are setting,” they wrote in a letter to the students.

If you are attending a March for Our Lives event in one of the 50 cities identified below, we want to help you get there with a free Lyft ride. We’ve partnered with the March For Our Lives organizers to ensure that our commitment of up to $1.5 million in free rides will have the most impact on their efforts — and yours.

How it will work:

  • If you are attending one of the 50 marches listed below, claim your free ride by RSVPing to the rally at www.marchforourlives.com/events.
  • On Friday, March 23, ride codes will be distributed to those who have RSVP’d through www.marchforourlives.com/events.
  • If you aren’t able to RSVP, ride codes to these marches will be available at www.lyft.com/MFOL starting Saturday morning.
  • Once you have received a code, enter it in the ‘promos’ tab of your Lyft app.

DC Moms Occupy Marco Rubio's Office from MB on Vimeo.

“Dear PoPville,

A group of DC residents and moms occupied Rubio’s office on Thursday morning for one hour.

Our message was that DC voters have voiced their desire for strict gun laws in the district. Rubio’s legislation to roll back dc gun laws is counter to what the people want, and stepping outside his role. He does not represent DC residents.

We were not representing any group. Just moms who care about the safety of our children and the voices of our residents.”

“Dear PoPville,

In case anybody has ever wondered whether lobbying your Congressperson works, I have just discovered that it actually does! Recently, DC Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton responded to a deluge of phone calls, visits and letters from her constituents to join the Climate Solutions Caucus, a bipartisan caucus focused on climate issues. When she joined last week, Rep Norton tweeted, “Combating climate change has long been one of my top priorities. Even with Trump pulling the U.S. out of Paris Climate Accord, we’re still working on bipartisan solutions in Congress, and businesses and states are implementing strategies to save the planet.”

Representative Norton announced that she was joining the Climate Solutions Caucus alongside Representative Jenniffer González Colón (R) of Puerto Rico, which brought membership in the Climate Solutions Caucus up to 72–a remarkable feat, given that the caucus is strictly bipartisan. (more…)
