“Dear PoPville,

I’m worried about a dog that has been tied up outside the H St NE CVS (645 H St NE) since at least 9 am. No food or water. I first saw the dog when I headed out on an errand and noticed it again as I was walking home over an hour later.

I called Animal Services at 10.30 am and they are sending someone out to look, but no ETA. I also asked around the CVS, but the owner wasn’t there either. I waited 15 minutes, but couldn’t stay any longer to keep an eye on the dog. I’m wondering if maybe someone in PoPville would be willing to keep an eye on the animal (and maybe offer it some food) until the owner or animal services arrives?”

Ed. Note: Mr. Shaggs was just found so this isn’t him!!

Mike passes on:

“URGENT ….. this guy got separated from me. His name is Shaggy. He is shy but friendly. He was last in Bloomingdale in R between 1st and north cap NW. He has microchip but slipped out of his collar. Help!!! Please text at 202-390-1513 and I will come get him instantly”

“Shaggy is still MIA. I’ve had an incredibly loving team of friends and nesters posting, postering, tweeting and more. NOT ONE call about him. The parking ticket person last night reported a woman holding a curly blond dog and walking down first. She had a black hat on. This was the same time Shaggy went missing. If she has him – she has not called animal control or taken him to vets and is not checking social media. There are literally 100 posters in the neighborhood since last night. This is miserable. We need Shaggy to come home! If you know anyone in the area who isn’t on social media – maybe reach out. I know he misses us as much as we miss him. Thanks for all the support friends”

“Dear PoPville,

After a recent horrible experience with my dog groomer I realized that there’s a concerning lack of local regulations, laws, and certification requirements for dog groomers in DC. Thus, there are no options for officially reporting an incident to any department solely pertaining to the protection of our furry friends. I work in the legal world of health care for people – so I was shocked to find out that a dog friendly city like DC has no laws protecting our pets from bad groomers. Reporting any complaint or incident to the DC Department of Health is – and should be – reserved for people. The form does not include anything about animals, and there are no separate forms for these issues. Additionally, even if you do file a complaint, there are no laws or requirements that they (or even our Office of the Attorney General consumer protection complaint) can enforce – making the efforts moot. Unfortunately, it took a very bad personal experience for me to discover all of this.

11th and Park Road, NW

Update:

Thanks to all who’ve messaged about this. Back in January 2009 we reported It’s Official – Columbia Heights Gets an Unofficial Dog Park at 11th and Park.

“Dear PoPville,

Help us save our beloved dog park!! The magical place all the lucky neighborhood dogs and humans get to go to to let their sillies out.

The lot, most warmly termed the 11th & Park Rd NW Dog Park is potentially under threat of closure. Through talks facilitated by local representatives and direct with WMATA (Metro), we’ve found out that WMATA, who owns the plot of land, is considering putting it up for sale for commercial use. “Dear PoPville,

My dog went missing yesterday in the Shepherd Park neighborhood and has been missing now for a full day. Here is the info on her:

Avery – 2-3 year old female pit bull mix. She is shy but loves food so will come to you if you have treats or peanut butter. She escaped from a backyard at Portal Drive and Eastern Ave NW. We live closer to Petworth so she could be wandering between the two neighborhoods as well. She was last seen around 2 pm Wednesday 1-17-18.

My contact info is (202) 330-1105. Thank you.”

“Dear PoPville,

We got him back!

A woman found him at 19th and independence SE. he came right up to her. He must have given up running. 830am this morning.

The entire community was amazing helping us get the word out and put eyes on the streets. We are eternally grateful.

Ed. Note: I saw the response on twitter and neighborhood listserves and it truly was amazing to see so many folks rally to find Gator.

If you see any posters out, feel free to tear them down.”

“Gator is 15 pound chihuahua basenji mix with fox like coloring and features. He was wearing a bow tie and shirt for NYE. He is cautious around new people but extremely friendly after he warms up.

We have an update. He was seen this morning at benning road where the bridge starts over the anacostia at the north east edge of the rfk parking lot. He’s likely in the woods on the river bank.

Please call Mark at 301-254-0599 with any info.”
