My partner and I are planning to adopt a dog from a local shelter/rescue agency in a few months. We’re hoping the PoPville (or AdoPtville) community might be able to provide some advice on the best ways to prepare. We both had dogs growing up and dog-sit regularly for friends and family, but this will be our first pet dog as adults.
There are some obvious supplies we’ll need to pick up, but are there good guides on other ways to prepare available? Recommended vets, dog-walkers, pet insurance, etc.?
Any direction, including past posts with similar conversation threads, would be greatly appreciated!”

“Dear PoPville,
Last week, during a 30 min, 3 mile run with my dog, a man passing us from behind us kicked his leg out in a deliberate attempt to kick my dog when he thought I wasn’t looking in his direction and then gave a weird/creepy smile when he realized I was looking. (Where Florida and Sherman Ave merge)
Then about 10 min later on 14th Street, a young woman squatted down in front my my dog while we were waiting at a cross walk and then began jumping/lunging toward her and making noise in blatant attempt to scare her. (She’s obviously lucky that my dog didn’t bite her because that’s a recipe for a dog bite!)
I have taken my dog on countless walks/runs in these areas and never experienced this before. Anyone else experiencing this?!”

I’m adopting a dog for the first time and have a question for the community: how do you take care of your dog’s paws?
The pavement can get very hot in the summer, and ice and salt can cause issues in the winter. As a recovering midwestern suburbanite, I need to know how to take care of the pooch’s paws when I walk him every day on hot, icy, or salty pavement.”

“Dear PoPville,
I had a bad experience with my (well-behaved, chill) dog on Howard University Sunday around noon. We were walking through campus when a group of students started screaming at us that dogs weren’t welcome on campus. One girl yelled, “This a closed campus, I’m going to call the cops on you.” The students continued to scream at us and follow us for around five minutes.
