Very Bad Bike Involved Crash at 13th and Florida Ave, NW – Roads Closed

A reader reports just after 7am:

“This is the scene at 13th and Florida NW right now. The roads are blocked off and in the intersection there’s a twisted yellow bicycle, a backpack, and what looks like a shirt. There’s a car stopped inside the police tape, too, but I don’t know if it was involved. (I’ve seen some horrible wipe-outs from bikers losing control going down that hill.) I really the biker is okay!”

Best DC Supermarket Closing on U Street

A reader reports:

“I was by Best Super Market (located on U Street between 15th and 16th). They are going out of business next month and have their groceries 50% off and beer/wine 30% off.”

I stopped in yesterday too and was told they’ll be closing next month or when the groceries run out. Another big “end of an era” for U Street. Back in 2011 we spoke about what retail U Street was missing – what do you think could/should fill this square footage today?

Reader Reports Early Morning Assault at Italian Pizza Kitchen

“Dear PoPville,

Went Sunday (4/17) around 3am with a friend to get some slices of pizza. After I placed my order, I stepped aside to wait for my pizza to be ready. While waiting, a belligerent guy in line to order pizza assaulted another guy standing behind him in line. From what I recall, he wasn’t punched but he was pushed & shoved by the assailant. We were standing right next to them when this happened. Then, within minutes, maybe even seconds, my friend (who was standing directly in front of me) was hit in the mouth (direct hit) by the assailant. He got knocked to the ground. As I was trying to help my friend, the assailant knocked my glasses off of my face. By the time I got my glasses back from a patron and could see again, the assailant was gone.

No one in the pizzeria, neither the staff nor patrons, were at all concerned about the two assaults that had just occurred. I didn’t expect patrons to intervene, but I was greatly disappointed and upset that no one working there came over to us to ask us how we were or if we wanted them to call the police. Instead, they just ignored us and didn’t do anything. Not one person who worked there asked us if we were okay or if they could do anything.

When we got back to my apartment, my friend and I called the police and filed a police report and we included the fact that the Italian Kitchen on U staff did nothing to help us.”

On Monday we learned that a Starbucks was very likely coming to 14th and U St, NW (I’m now 99.9% sure this is accurate.) And now I’ve got even more scuttlebutt for some retail spaces around 14th and U Street, NW. I’m told that it is very likely a Lululemon yoga clothing and accessories store is coming as well as a Nando’s Peri Peri chicken spot. Thumbs up or down for these likely new additions?
